Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present description refers to a herbicide combination comprising a carbamate herbicide and at least one additional herbicide. Furthermore, the present description refers to a method for controlling weeds by applying an effective amount of the herbicide combination. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [0002] Herbicides are chemical substances used to control unwanted plants/weeds. The mode of action of herbicides is a biochemical or physical mechanism that disrupts or alters one or more of the metabolic processes of unwanted plants/weeds, thus controlling their growth. Therefore, when and how any herbicide should be applied can be determined by the herbicide's mode of action. However, there are certain species or groups of unwanted plants/weeds that are susceptible to certain herbicides and not susceptible to others. This may be because either the herbicides use different biochemical pathways or the herbicides contain slightly different enzymes. In situations where one herbicide is ineffective, additional herbicide(s) with different modes of action may provide better results. [0003] Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors, or Group 14 herbicides, are labeled for pre-emergence as well as post-emergence applications in soybeans. These herbicides interfere with chlorophyll production for photosynthesis and rapidly destroy tissues. Symptoms of herbicide damage from pre-emergence PPO applications are usually due to one of three causes: herbicide being splashed or washed onto the tissue at or shortly after emergence; inadequate furrow closure, allowing the herbicide to be applied or washed directly into the furrow after rain; or slow soybean metabolism during prolonged periods of cold and rain. Post-emergence use of PPO herbicides leads to blotching or necrotic tissue where the herbicide comes into contact. Damage is most likely to occur when post-emergence applications are made during hot, humid weather or if long periods of cold temperatures follow the application. Therefore, there is a need to combine PPO inhibitors with another herbicide in order to overcome the problems/disadvantages mentioned above. [0004] Asulam, also known as methyl N-(4-aminophenyl)sulfonylcarbamate, is a broad-spectrum carbamate herbicide. Asulam is a plant growth inhibitor that inhibits folate synthesis by suppressing dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) in plants. The structure of Asulam is represented as: [0005] Asulam is especially useful for post-emergence control of perennial grasses in crops such as sugarcane, soybeans, cotton, etc. It provides effective control for a wide variety of herbicide-resistant and herbicide-tolerant weeds while reducing phytotoxicity in crops. [0006] In addition, herbicide combinations known in the art usually have some disadvantages. They do not have herbicidal activity or have insufficient herbicidal activity against specific unwanted plants/weeds, the spectrum of unwanted plants/weeds that can be controlled with the herbicides is not broad enough, the selectivity and compatibility of the herbicides with crops are very low, thus causing unwanted damage and/or reduced crop yields, the initial herbicidal activity is not acceptable or not strong enough and/or the herbicidal activity does not last long enough. For these reasons, there is a constant need to develop herbicide combinations that overcome the disadvantages mentioned above. There is also a need for an environmentally safe herbicide combination that can selectively control unwanted plants/weeds while leaving other plants and crops unaffected. OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION [0007] It is a primary objective of the present description to provide a herbicide combination comprising a carbamate herbicide and at least one additional herbicide for the control or prevention of unwanted plants/weeds in crops. [0008] It is yet another objective of the present description to provide a herbicide combination possessing increased efficacy in relation to the individual herbicides. [0009] Another objective of the present description is to provide a herbicide combination that achieves increased yield in crops to which it is applied, by reducing the number of weeds in the crops. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0010] In one aspect, the present description provides a herbicide combination comprising: a carbamate herbicide; and at least one additional herbicide selected from PPO inhibitor herbicides. [0011] In another aspect, the present description provides a method for the efficient control, suppression or eradication of weeds by applying an effective amount of the herbicide combination comprising a carbamate herbicide and at least one additional herbicide. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [0012] The present description will now be described with reference to the attached examples, in which embodiments of the description are shown. This description is not intended to be a detailed catalog of all the different ways in which the description can be
