Description
Technical field [0001] The present description refers to systems and methods for selecting medical treatments for a patient, for example, methods for determining the eligibility of patients to participate in a clinical trial. Background [0002] The typical timeline for a patient, from the onset of symptoms of a disease to diagnosis and treatment, can be broken down into several stages, each potentially involving different physicians. Similarly, the process by which a patient may be considered eligible for a particular clinical trial can also be defined along this timeline, with patients often being identified as eligible for a trial long after being diagnosed with a condition and often long after the start of specialized inpatient treatments, which, in turn, can impact their eligibility. In many cases, patients are only identified as eligible after the start of second- or third-line treatment for the condition. [0003] Existing methods also depend on the attending physician being aware that a patient may be eligible for a particular treatment or clinical trial and, in turn, informing them of their eligibility at a time when that information can be used. This depends on the physician having prior knowledge of the specific treatment and remembering to inform the patient at the appropriate time. [0004] The combination of these factors often means that patients are unable to enroll in a specific study or proceed with a specific treatment until it is too late. From the perspective of Clinical Research Organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and others offering clinical studies or specific medical treatments, existing processes often result in potentially eligible patients not being reached in time, and the number of eligible patients being unnecessarily reduced. [0005] In more detail, a typical existing pathway for enrolling a patient in a clinical trial might begin with the patient going to their general practitioner or family doctor with symptoms of a specific illness. The general practitioner then investigates and establishes a diagnosis or refers the patient to a specialist who does so. Treatment for the illness is then initiated, possibly by a different clinician. Subsequently, and possibly only after several rounds of treatment for the illness, it may occur to a clinician that the patient could potentially be eligible for a clinical trial. The patient may then be asked if they wish to participate in the trial. However, at this advanced stage, it may be that a previously eligible patient is now excluded from the trial, for example, because they have already undergone some treatment and are no longer treatment-naive. Summary of the Invention [0006] The embodiments of the description aim to address the above and other problems. The aspects of the invention are as set forth in the independent claims and the optional features are defined in the dependent claims. [0007] Aspects of the description are presented in independent claims and optional features are presented in dependent claims. Aspects of the description may be provided together, and features of one aspect may be applied to other aspects. [0008] One aspect of the description provides a computer-implemented method for determining medical treatment for a patient, the method comprising: obtaining, with a data ingestion circuit, a patient dataset comprising a plurality of patient values, each indicative of a patient characteristic; applying, with a model, a set of eligibility criteria to the patient values to determine whether the patient is eligible for medical treatment; obtaining, with the data ingestion circuit and in response to a detection that the status of patient data has changed in an electronic medical records system, one or more additional patient values for the patient; reapplying, with the machine learning model, the eligibility criteria to the patient dataset to determine whether the patient is eligible for medical treatment; obtaining, with the data ingestion circuit and in response to a determination that a diagnostic data status in the medical records system has changed, an indication of a diagnosis of a medical condition for the patient; and, in response to the indication that the patient has been diagnosed with the medical condition and that the patient is eligible for medical treatment, provide, through a user interface layer or through a network interface connection, an output signal to direct a physician to provide medical treatment to the patient. [0009] The method may also comprise continuous monitoring, using the data ingestion circuit, of the status of patient data in the electronic record system. The method may comprise obtaining, using the data ingestion circuit, patient values, for example, the patient dataset, at regular intervals, for example, from the electronic record system. For example, the method may comprise, at regular intervals, providing a request signal to the configured electronic medical system to cause the electr
