Description

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present invention relates to a composition comprising a eutectic mixture of the fungicide boscalid and strobilurin. The invention further relates to a process for formulating a composition comprising a eutectic mixture of the fungicide boscalid and strobilurin and to a method for controlling phytopathogenic fungi using said compositions. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION: [0002] Boscalid is a fungicide known for being a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor. It is a fungicide with translaminar and acropetalic movement within the plant leaf, providing preventive action and, in some cases, curative action. It inhibits spore germination, germ tube elongation, and is also effective in all other stages of fungal development. Boscalid is used to control Alternaria, Botrytis, powdery mildew, purple blotch, rust, leaf spot, Alternaria blight, gray mold, and stem rot. [0003] In order to broaden the spectrum of activity, as well as improve the effectiveness of fungicide control, it is common practice to combine a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor, such as boscalid, with fungicidal active ingredients from other classes. One of these important classes of fungicide is the quinone outside inhibitor (QoI). [0004] Strobilurins are QoI-inhibiting fungicides that inhibit fungal respiration by binding to the cytochrome bc1 complex at the QoI site in mitochondrial respiration. These fungicides work by inhibiting the ability of fungi to undergo normal respiration. Strobilurin chemistries have a very specific target site, or mode of action (MOA). Strobilurins are known to control fungi such as Erysiphe graminis, Puccinia spp., Leptosphaeria nodorum, Septoria tritici, and Pyrenophora teres in temperate cereals; Pyricularia oryzae and Rhizoctonia solani in rice; Plasmopara viticola and Uncinula necator in vines; Sphaerotheca fuliginea and Pseudoperonospora cubensis in cucurbits; Phytophthora infestans and Alternaria solani in potatoes and tomatoes; Mycosphaerella arachidis, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii in peanuts; Monilinia spp and Cladosporium carpophilum in peach; Pythium spp. and Rhizoctonia solani in grass; Mycosphaerella spp in banana; Cladosporium caryigenum on pecan; Elsinoe fawcettii, Colletotrichum spp. and Guignardia citricarpa in citrus; and Colletotrichum spp. and Hemileia uvatrix in the cafe. [0005] Considering the improvements that can be expected in effectively controlling phytopathogenic fungi by combining succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors with strobilurin fungicides, there is a need to explore and develop stable compositions of the active ingredients from such groups. [0006] It is noted that boscalid undergoes irresistible morphological changes when placed in contact with water or solvents. It is further observed that specific techniques and tedious and expensive procedures are often required to produce boscalid formulations suitable for commercial production as well as for the intended application. Such formulations, when stored for long periods, also develop stability problems. [0007] Therefore, it is necessary to develop stable boscalid compositions, along with a strobilurin fungicide that eliminates the disadvantages of known formulations. [0008] Surprisingly, the inventors of the present invention have discovered that compositions comprising a eutectic mixture of the fungicide boscalid and strobilurin can be prepared which do not undergo any morphological changes, are stable and highly suitable for the intended application for the control of phytopathogenic fungi.
