Description

Weight management composition Technical Field The present invention relates generally to compositions and methods for improving the health of an individual, and more particularly to compositions and methods for promoting weight management in an individual. Background The prevalence of overweight and obesity has become one of the most significant health problems faced worldwide. The incidence of obesity has increased almost twice over the past 30 years, about 40% of adults over 18 years of age are now overweight, and about 13% obese worldwide. It is well known that the presence of obesity is associated with the development of many other diseases, such as fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, asthma, chronic kidney disease and depression. Obesity is caused by an imbalance between the total energy expenditure and the energy intake of an individual. Thus, these obesity-related complications can be prevented or treated by reducing body weight. One of the most effective strategies available for weight loss is to engage in a structural program of physical exercise, such as endurance or resistance exercise training. Research conducted over the past decades has repeatedly shown that sports or physical exercise increases energy consumption, thereby promoting weight loss and improving health, but most of the population in most countries does not reach recommended levels. The main reasons for individuals not participating in sports include inconvenience, expense, time-consuming, difficult to perform, boring, or unpleasant. Eating healthy, balanced foods without excessive amounts is a method of reducing energy intake to promote fat loss and maintain good health. However, like sports, eating healthy foods has many obstacles, such as lack of more expense and time needed to obtain food, prepare food, and in contrast, many healthy foods or diets are not palatable than unhealthy alternatives. Furthermore, even though weight loss is achieved by food and exercise, the reduction in fat is often insufficient to meet the overall weight loss required by an individual to maintain optimal health. Accordingly, it is desirable to provide improved weight management compositions and methods for improving the health of an individual. Disclosure of Invention Weight management compositions have now been developed which have been determined to promote weight loss in individuals. Accordingly, in a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a weight management composition comprising a weight loss agent and a mitochondrial enhancer. In one embodiment, a weight management composition is provided comprising a weight loss agent comprising green tea extract, green coffee bean extract, and forskolin, and a mitochondrial enhancer comprising beet root extract, coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E. In another aspect of the invention, a method for promoting weight management in a mammal is provided, the method comprising the step of administering to the mammal a weight management composition comprising a weight loss agent and a mitochondrial enhancer. In another aspect, a method of treating or ameliorating at least one of body weight, body fat, mitochondrial capacity, fatty liver disease, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress levels, brown adipose tissue activity, and systemic inflammatory levels in a mammal is provided, the method comprising administering to the mammal a composition comprising a weight loss agent and a mitochondrial enhancer. These and other aspects of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description with reference to the accompanying drawings.
