Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a seal assembly for a surgical access assembly. The access assembly includes an instrument valve housing and a valve assembly disposed within the instrument valve housing. The valve assembly includes a shield assembly and a seal assembly disposed adjacent to the shield assembly. The seal assembly includes a plurality of seal segments defining a substantially hexagonal body. Each seal segment of the plurality of seal segments includes a base portion and a seal portion extending from the base portion. Each base portion includes an outer edge formed from three segments. Each seal segment of the plurality of seal segments is disposed relative to an adjacent seal segment of the plurality of seal segments such that two of the three segments of the outer edge of the respective seal segment are aligned with each other. The valve assembly further includes a centering mechanism for biasing the seal assembly and the guard assembly toward the center of the lumen of the instrument valve.

Claims (8)

  1. 1. An access assembly, comprising: An instrument valve housing including upper, lower and inner housing sections and defining a cavity, and A valve assembly disposed within the cavity of the instrument valve housing, the valve assembly comprising: the protective component is arranged on the inner side of the protective component, A seal assembly disposed adjacent to the guard assembly, the seal assembly including a plurality of sections each having a seal portion and a respective support portion supporting the respective seal portion, adjacent two of the plurality of sections being connected to each other by a connector portion, respectively, the adjacent two sections of the seal assembly being folded at a hinge portion between the adjacent two sections such that a length of the support portion of one of the adjacent two sections adjacent to the hinge portion overlaps a length of the support portion of the other of the adjacent two sections adjacent to the hinge portion, thereby converting the plurality of sections from an unfolded configuration to a folded configuration, and A centering mechanism for biasing the seal assembly and guard assembly toward a center of the lumen of the instrument valve; Wherein in the folded configuration, the plurality of sections form a hexagonal configuration.
  2. 2. The access assembly of claim 1, wherein the sealing portions of the plurality of sections define an opening.
  3. 3. The access assembly of claim 2, wherein the opening comprises a diameter of from 0.025 "to 0.100".
  4. 4. The access assembly of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sections includes six sections.
  5. 5. A seal assembly for an instrument valve assembly, the seal assembly comprising: A plurality of sections each having a sealing portion and a respective support portion supporting the respective sealing portion, adjacent two sections of the plurality of sections being connected to each other by a connector portion, respectively, the adjacent two sections of the sealing assembly being folded at a hinge portion between the adjacent two sections such that a length of the support portion of one of the adjacent two sections adjacent to the hinge portion overlaps a length of the support portion of the other of the adjacent two sections adjacent to the hinge portion, thereby converting the plurality of sections from an unfolded configuration to a folded configuration; Wherein in the folded configuration, the plurality of sections form a hexagonal configuration.
  6. 6. The seal assembly of claim 5, wherein the seal portions of the plurality of segments define an opening.
  7. 7. The seal assembly of claim 6, wherein the opening comprises a diameter of from 0.025 "to 0.100".
  8. 8. The seal assembly of claim 5, wherein the plurality of segments includes six segments.

Description

Seal assembly for surgical access assembly Cross Reference to Related Applications The present application claims the benefit and priority of U.S. provisional patent application No. 62/916,931 filed on 10 months 18 of 2019, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field The present disclosure relates to an access assembly for minimally invasive surgery comprising a seal. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to seals for surgical access assemblies. Background To facilitate minimally invasive surgery, a working space must be created in the required surgical space. An insufflation gas, typically CO 2, is introduced into the abdomen of the patient to create an inflated state known as pneumoperitoneum. The access port is used to allow for the introduction of surgical instruments and endoscopes (or other visualization tools). These ports maintain pressure for the pneumoperitoneum because they have one or more seals for the surgical instrument. Typically, a "zero seal" in the access port seals the port in the absence of a surgical instrument in the port, and the instrument seal seals around a surgical instrument that has been inserted through the access port. The breadth of surgical instruments on the market today requires a robust seal that can be adjusted to a variety of sizes and withstand multiple insertions of surgical instruments. Some of the instruments may include sharp edges that may tear or damage the seal. Accordingly, an access assembly having improved seal durability would be beneficial. Disclosure of Invention An access assembly having improved seal durability is provided. The access assembly includes an instrument valve housing and a valve assembly disposed within a cavity of the instrument valve housing. The instrument valve housing includes upper, lower and inner housing sections and defines a cavity. The valve assembly includes a seal assembly, a shield assembly disposed adjacent to the seal assembly and configured for engagement with the seal assembly, and a centering mechanism for maintaining the seal assembly and the shield assembly centered within a lumen of the instrument valve. The guard assembly includes a ring portion and a plurality of petals. The plurality of petals extend radially outwardly from the ring portion when the guard assembly is in the unfolded condition and the plurality of petals extend radially inwardly when the guard assembly is in the folded condition. In an embodiment, the guard assembly includes first, second, third, and fourth flaps, each flap including a flap portion and a connector portion for engaging the flap portion to the ring portion. Each tab portion may comprise a first tab section and a second tab section. Each of the first and second flap sections may define a recess therebetween. The first flap section of each flap of the plurality of flaps may overlap with the second flap section of an adjacent flap of the plurality of flaps. In an embodiment, the ring portion defines a plurality of openings and each connector portion defines a plurality of openings. The flap portion of the first guard member may overlap the flap portion of the second guard member. The flap portion of the second guard member may overlap the flap portion of the third guard member. The flap portion of the third guard member may overlap the flap portion of the fourth guard member. The flap portion of the fourth guard member may overlap the flap portion of the first guard member. The valve assembly may also include upper, lower retainers, and an intermediate member. At least one of the upper or lower retainer members may include a plurality of pins configured to engage a ring portion of the shield assembly. The seal assembly may include an hourglass-shaped seal supported by the upper and lower flange members. The intermediate retainer member may be received between the upper and lower flange members. The centering mechanism may comprise a bellows. The centering mechanism may include a collar and a plurality of spokes extending outwardly from the collar. Each spoke of the plurality of spokes may include a rib extending at least partially along a length of the spoke. Another access assembly having improved seal durability is provided. The access assembly includes an instrument valve housing and a valve assembly disposed within a cavity of the instrument valve housing. The instrument valve housing includes upper, lower and inner housing sections and defines a cavity. The valve assembly includes a shield assembly, a seal assembly disposed adjacent to the shield assembly, and a centering mechanism for maintaining the seal assembly and shield assembly centered within a lumen of the instrument valve. The seal assembly includes a plurality of seal segments. Each seal section of the plurality of seal sections includes a substantially C-shaped base portion and a semi-conical seal portion. Each seal section of the plurality of seal sections is secured to
