Description

System and method for user equipment assisted carrier aggregation Background A User Equipment (UE) may establish a connection with at least one of a plurality of different networks or network types. When a network connection is established, such as, for example, a connection with a 5G new air interface (NR) network, the UE may provide capability information to the network indicating the UE's radio access capabilities. The capability information may enable the network to provide relevant services to the UE. For example, the UE may advertise multiple band combinations that may be used for Dual Connectivity (DC) and/or Carrier Aggregation (CA). Subsequently, to provide DC and/or CA to the UE, the network may configure the UE with multiple Component Carriers (CCs) to facilitate communication between the network and the UE over one of the advertised band combinations. The UE may utilize additional network capabilities when connecting to the network. For example, the UE may utilize a Carrier Aggregation (CA) function in which data is transmitted over various network bands using a Primary Component Carrier (PCC) and at least one Secondary Component Carrier (SCC). Typically, the UE advertises a combination of PCC and SCC supported by the UE. Subsequently, the network determines CCs included in the CA, such as an Uplink (UL) CA, for example. However, the network does so without any feedback from the UE. Thus, the UL CA combination selected by the network may include CCs that result in poor power and/or throughput performance, thereby reducing network efficiency. Disclosure of Invention In some example embodiments, a method is performed by a user equipment. The method includes receiving a measurement configuration request from a network, measuring a quality of one or more Uplink (UL) Carrier Aggregation (CA) combinations in response to the measurement configuration request, wherein each UL CA combination includes a plurality of component carriers, generating a message including the quality of the one or more UL CA combinations, and transmitting the message to the network. Further exemplary embodiments include a method performed by a User Equipment (UE) in which Uplink (UL) Carrier Aggregation (CA) has been activated, the UL CA comprising a UL CA combination comprising a Primary Component Carrier (PCC) and a Secondary Component Carrier (SCC). The method includes determining that the UL CA should be deactivated and transmitting a quality report to the network including quality measurements of only the PCC. Still further exemplary embodiments include a method performed at a network element. The method includes instructing a UE to transmit a first Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) on a Component Carrier (CC) of a first UL CA combination, receiving the first SRS on the CC of the first UL CA combination, and determining a quality characteristic of the first UL CA combination based on the first SRS.
