Description

Apparatus and method for prompting conscious breathing Technical Field The present invention relates to the field of respiration. More particularly, the present invention relates to conscious breathing. Even more particularly, the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for prompting conscious breathing. Background Any reference herein to background art should not be construed as an admission that such art forms part of the common general knowledge in australia or elsewhere. Anxiety disorders are common mental disorders in modern society. Recent numbers indicate that about 18% of the U.S. population suffers from anxiety disorders. Similar proportions were observed in australia. It will be appreciated that anxiety is a significant problem. There are several ways to treat anxiety. Including psychotherapy and psychotropic therapy. However, it is speculated that anxiety disorders may also be alleviated by correcting breathing patterns. This is especially true for people experiencing elevated anxiety levels or panic states (i.e., panic attacks). Respiration modulation is presumed to alleviate such problems. Regulation of respiration is also assumed to have applications beyond anxiety treatment (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Studies in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder children have shown that repetitive movement may increase concentration and attention. This repetitive motion is known as stimulation. Stimulation is related to self-stimulating behavior that typically involves repetitive motion and sound. In this regard, stimulation may calm a person by preventing less predictable environmental stimuli. There is increasing evidence that repetitive behavior may be very useful. In this regard, the stimulatory behavior may give individuals, including autism spectrum disorder patients, a sense of control, helping them to cope with overwhelming external stimuli and convey their mood. Stimulation is also considered as a useful aid to meditation exercises. It is well recognized that meditation is a widely used practice for promoting mental health. It will be appreciated that it would be advantageous to alleviate one or more of the above problems, or at least provide the consumer with a useful or commercial alternative.
