Description
Display device and motor vehicle comprising a display device The present invention relates to a display device comprising a backlight unit, a liquid crystal display panel, at least one liquid crystal optical unit and a control unit, wherein the liquid crystal optical unit comprises liquid crystal, which changes its refractive index profile according to an applied voltage. The invention further relates to a motor vehicle comprising a display device. In modern motor vehicles, there is increasing emphasis on providing a plurality of visual information to vehicle drivers and other vehicle occupants. But not every message is prepared for every vehicle occupant. The video may be presented to the co-driver, for example, on a display of a display device. In order to avoid distraction of the driver of the vehicle, it is therefore preferable to ensure that the driver cannot see the video image. Thus, a private mode is desired for a display device in the vehicle interior space. With a display device having a private mode, it is possible to show, for example, movies or videos to a co-driver not only for entertainment. In a vehicle scenario for transporting multiple persons, content may also be presented to the person being transported while preventing the content from being seen by other riders. For other information, it may conversely be advantageous that this information can be seen by all at the same time. It is therefore advantageous if the respective display device has a public viewing mode in addition to the private mode. A filter for a passenger display is known from DE 10 2019 005 193 A1, which is designed to be switchable in order to prevent the passenger display from being seen from the side. The filter comprises a static privacy protecting film and a switchable privacy protecting film, which are arranged one above the other, and a light source associated with each privacy protecting film for illuminating the privacy protecting film. Patent document DE 11 2010 004 660 T5 discloses a liquid crystal display device having a first backlight unit and a second backlight unit. The first backlight unit includes a first optical element that transmits light incident from the second backlight unit, converts light output from the light source into light having a narrow angular direction distribution, and radiates the converted light toward the rear surface of the liquid crystal display panel. The second backlight unit includes a second optical element that converts light output from the light source into light having a wide-angle direction distribution and radiates the converted light toward a rear surface of the liquid crystal display panel. Patent document US 2018/0364405 A1 discloses a viewing angle control element comprising a biaxial compensation layer and a plurality of polarizers. Polarizers are arranged on opposite sides of the biaxial compensation layer. A backlight device is known from patent document US 2017/0336661 A1, which comprises a waveguide and a light source arrangement. The waveguide may have a hierarchical structure. Patent document US 10,663,776B1 discloses a display control unit that controls the viewing angle in a display system, in which a private mode and a public mode can be set. The display control unit includes a backlight unit and a lens device. In the related art, a so-called privacy film or louver film is provided in front of and/or behind the liquid crystal display panel in order to limit the visible range. Such films are used, for example, in monitors for computers or notebook computers. But the louver film absorbs a higher portion of light and thus the brightness of the liquid crystal display panel is reduced. Furthermore, it is not possible to switch between different modes. It is furthermore known to arrange lenses or lenticular lenses in front of the liquid crystal display panel so that the display of the liquid crystal display panel is visible only in a small angular range in front of the liquid crystal display panel. In this solution, although the light output is large, there is no possibility of switching between private and public modes. Another solution known from the prior art is to use two different backlight units, which are assigned to a larger visual range and a smaller visual range. Depending on the mode, one of the two backlight units is turned on. But the solution using two backlight units implies significant additional costs, since multiple LEDs and optical components have to be used. The object of the invention is to provide a display device which has a variable viewing mode and which can be produced inexpensively with low technical outlay. In order to solve this problem, a display device is proposed, which comprises a backlight unit, a liquid crystal display panel, at least one liquid crystal optical unit and a control unit, wherein the liquid crystal optical unit comprises liquid crystal, which changes its refractive index profile as a function of an applied voltage,
