Description

Composition suitable for skin care Cross Reference to Related Applications The present application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application 63/588,030 filed on 5/10/2023, the complete disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. Technical Field The present invention relates generally to compositions for skin care. In particular, the present invention relates to skin care compositions comprising myrrh resin extract and retinoids. The invention also relates to a method of treating skin using said composition. Background Human skin undergoes certain aging processes, partly attributable to intrinsic processes (e.g., time aging) and partly attributable to external factors (e.g., photoaging). In addition, the skin may undergo transient or even sustained changes such as acne, oily or dry skin, keratosis, rosacea, light sensitivity, inflammation, erythema nodosum and allergic or autoimmune reactions such as dermatological and photo-inflammatory skin diseases. The consequences of the aging process described above may include thinning of the skin, weakening of the interweaving of epidermis and dermis, and a reduction in the number of cells and blood supply vessels. These consequences are generally undesirable and individuals suffering from these problems will seek topical treatment to address them. Retinoids have been used to treat skin disorders caused by intrinsic aging, extrinsic factors, acne or skin disorders. However, retinoids can be difficult to formulate because many retinoids are prone to photodegradation and retinoids can be irritating to the skin of some individuals. Myrrh resin is a natural extract from a tree species of the genus myrrh (Commiphora). Since ancient times, myrrh resins are known for use in fragrances and pharmaceuticals, for example as preservatives. Topical application of myrrh resin to the skin may cause skin irritation. One option to avoid skin irritation caused by retinoids is to propose alternative compounds that activate the same or similar biological pathways as retinoids. However, this is a complex task, as such alternative compounds are difficult to identify. Another option would be to enhance or potentiate the beneficial effects of the retinoid, thereby limiting the amount of retinoid that is topically applied. Also, this task is complicated by the difficulty in identifying these compounds. There is a continuing need and interest to identify compounds or products that can enhance or potentiate the activation of retinoids on beneficial biological pathways without increasing the undesirable side effects of retinoids, such as skin irritation. It is particularly desirable to increase the potency of retinoids with known and authentic natural ingredients. Disclosure of Invention One aspect of the present invention relates to a skin care composition comprising a myrrh resin extract and a retinoid. This aspect may be combined with the various embodiments in any combination. Thus, in some embodiments, the myrrh resin extract is produced from a resin of a plant of the genus myrrh. In one or more embodiments, the myrrh resin extract is obtained by extraction using an organic solvent. In some embodiments, the myrrh resin extract is present in an amount ranging from about 0.000001% to about 10% by total weight of the composition. In one or more embodiments, the retinoid is selected from the group consisting of retinol, retinal, retinol esters, retinoic acid, derivatives thereof, and combinations thereof. In one or more embodiments, the retinoid is present in an amount ranging from about 0.001% to about 10% by total weight of the composition. In one or more embodiments, the ratio of myrrh resin to retinoid is from about 100:1 to about 1:10. In some embodiments, the skin care composition further comprises an ingredient selected from the group consisting of surfactants, chelating agents, emollients, moisturizers, conditioners, preservatives, sunscreens, fragrances, and combinations of two or more thereof. In one or more embodiments, the skin care composition is in the form of a solution, suspension, emulsion, lotion, cream, slurry, gel, stick, spray, ointment, liquid lotion, soap bar, shampoo, conditioner, paste, foam, powder, mousse, shave cream, hydrogel, or film-forming product. Another aspect of the invention relates to a skin care composition comprising from about 0.01% to about 2.0% by weight of myrrh resin extract, based on the total weight of the composition, and from about 0.01% to about 1.0% by weight of retinol, based on the total weight of the composition. Another aspect of the invention relates to a method of skin treatment comprising topically applying to the skin a composition of any of the embodiments described above. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a method of treating signs of skin aging comprising topically applying to skin in need of treatment for skin aging a skin care composition according to any of the embodiments d
