The controller includes executable code operative to capture an image of a rear field of view of the vehicle via the camera, determine a direction of eye gaze of the operator via the operator monitoring device, determine an operational mode, and display a portion of the image of the rear field of view via the digital display screen, wherein the portion of the image of the rear field of view is determined based on the operational mode and the direction of eye gaze of the operator.

  1. 1. A side view mirror system for a vehicle, the system comprising: a rear-view focusing camera disposed at a side of the vehicle and arranged to capture a field of view behind the vehicle; An operator monitoring device arranged to dynamically determine a direction of eye gaze of the operator; digital display screen, and A controller in communication with the digital display screen, the rear-view camera and the operator monitoring device; Wherein the controller comprises executable code that operates to: Capturing an image of a field of view behind the vehicle by the camera; detecting, by an operator monitoring device, a direction of a current eye gaze of an operator; Determining an operation mode, and A portion of an image of a field of view behind the vehicle is displayed via a digital display screen, wherein the portion of the image of the field of view is determined based on the mode of operation and a direction of the operator's current eye gaze.
  2. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the mode of operation comprises one of a mirror-like view, a hazard-based view, or a region-of-interest-based view.
  3. 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the display portion of the image of the field of view determined based on the mode of operation and the direction of the operator's current eye gaze includes image enhancement, the hazard on the roadway being highlighted when the hazard-based view is selected.

The system of claim 2, wherein the display portion of the image of the field of view determined based on the mode of operation and the direction of the operator's current eye gaze includes image enhancement, the region of interest being highlighted when the region of interest based view is selected.
  5. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the operational mode comprises one of an extended view, an enhanced risk view, or an extended risk enhancement view.
  6. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller determines the mode of operation based on operator preferences.
  7. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the operator monitoring means comprises means arranged to determine the position of the operator's head to determine the direction of the operator's eye gaze.
  8. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the rear-view focusing camera is disposed on the vehicle exterior side surface proximate the side-view mirror.
  9. 9. The system of claim 8, comprising a rear-view focusing camera disposed on a left outboard surface of the vehicle proximate the left side view mirror.
  10. 10. The system of claim 8, comprising a rear-view focusing camera disposed on a right exterior surface of the vehicle proximate the right side view mirror.

Description

Side view mirror system for vehicle Technical Field The invention relates to a side view mirror system for a vehicle. Background The vehicle is equipped with side view mirrors with which the vehicle operator can visually monitor the rear area behind, to the left and to the right of the vehicle. Such monitoring is useful in a variety of traffic conditions including, but not limited to, lane changing, merging, exiting, during an intersection turn, and the like. Such monitoring is also useful in reversing, i.e. operating in the opposite direction of travel. Disclosure of Invention It is desirable to be able to determine a parameter related to the eye gaze direction of the vehicle operator and display on a near-end digital screen an image obtained from a field of view (FOV) behind the vehicle based on the parameter. This is to provide visual information to the operator that aids in operating the vehicle. The concepts described herein include a method, system, and/or apparatus arranged and configured to provide a side view mirror system for a vehicle, the system including a rear view focusing camera, means for determining an eye gaze direction of an operator, a digital display screen, and a controller capable of dynamically monitoring a field of view (FOV) behind the vehicle and selecting a portion of the FOV displayed as an image on the digital display screen based at least in part on the direction of the eye gaze of the operator. One aspect of the present disclosure may include an on-board rearview focus camera arranged to monitor a field of view behind a vehicle. The operator monitoring device is arranged to dynamically monitor an eye gaze of the operator. The controller communicates with the digital display screen, the rear-view camera and the operator monitoring device. The controller includes executable code operative to capture an image of a rear field of view of the vehicle via the camera, determine a direction of eye gaze of the operator via the operator monitoring device, determine an operational mode, and display a portion of the image of the rear field of view via the digital display screen, wherein the portion of the image of the rear field of view is determined based on the operational mode and the direction of eye gaze of the operator. Another aspect of the disclosure may include a side view mirror system for a vehicle, the system including a rear view focusing camera disposed on a side of the vehicle and arranged to capture a field of view behind the vehicle, an operator monitoring device arranged to dynamically determine an eye gaze direction of an operator, a digital display screen, and a controller. The controller communicates with the digital display device, the rear-view camera, and the operator monitoring device. The controller includes executable code operative to capture an image of a field of view behind the vehicle via the camera, detect a direction of a current eye gaze of the operator via the operator monitoring device, determine an operational mode, and display a portion of the image of the field of view behind the vehicle via the digital display screen, wherein the portion of the image of the field of view is determined based on the operational mode and the direction of the current eye gaze of the operator. Another aspect of the present disclosure may include the mode of operation being one of a mirror-like view, a hazard-based view, or a region-of-interest-based view. Another aspect of the disclosure may include a display portion of an image of a field of view determined based on an operation mode and a current eye gaze direction of an operator, including image enhancement including a hazard on a road highlighted when the hazard-based view is selected. Another aspect of the disclosure may include a display portion of an image of a field of view determined based on an operation mode and a current eye gaze direction of an operator, including image enhancement, wherein the region of interest is highlighted when the region of interest-based view is selected. Another aspect of the present disclosure may include the mode of operation being one of an extended view, an enhanced risk view, or an extended risk enhanced view. Another aspect of the disclosure may include the controller determining the mode of operation based on operator preferences. Another aspect of the present disclosure may include that the operator monitoring device is a device arranged to determine a position of the head of the operator to determine a direction of eye gaze of the operator.
