Abstract

The present disclosure provides a vehicle console having a tray with exposed cup holders. A vehicle console includes a housing having a side wall defining a storage compartment with a top access opening of a first size, the top access opening having a first length, and a cover coupled to the housing and movable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second dimension and a second length, the second length being less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and is configured with a cup holder positioned below the exposed open top such that a container is exposed when placed in the cup holder.

Claims (11)

1. 1. A vehicle console, the vehicle console comprising: A housing having a side wall defining a storage compartment, the storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size, the top access opening having a first length; A cover coupled to the housing and movable between an open position and a closed position, the cover having a second dimension and a second length, the second length being less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the cover is in the closed position, and A first tray disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder positioned below the exposed open top such that a container is exposed when placed in the cup holder.
2. 2. The vehicle console as defined in claim 1, wherein the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening.
3. 3. The vehicle console of claim 2 wherein the cover pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing.
4. 4. The vehicle console of claim 1, wherein the tray further comprises one or more open tray sections.
5. 5. The vehicle console of claim 4 wherein the first tray includes a first open tray portion and a second open tray portion.
6. 6. The vehicle console of claim 1, further comprising a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and movable to a position below the cover.
7. 7. The vehicle console of claim 6 wherein the second tray is supported on a rail proximate the top access opening.
8. 8. The vehicle console of claim 7, wherein the first tray is supported on a bottom of the storage compartment.
9. 9. The vehicle console as defined in claim 1, wherein the top access opening and the cover are generally rectangular.
10. 10. The vehicle console of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the console is a center console configured to be positioned between a first seat and a second seat in a vehicle.
11. 11. A vehicle, the vehicle comprising: A first seat; A second seat spaced apart from the first seat, and A center console located between the first seat and the second seat, the center console comprising: A housing having a side wall defining a storage compartment, the storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size, the top access opening having a first length; A cover coupled to the housing and movable between an open position and a closed position, the cover having a second dimension and a second length, the second length being less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the cover is in the closed position, and A first tray disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder positioned below the exposed open top such that a container is exposed when placed in the cup holder.

Vehicle console with tray having exposed cup holder Technical Field The present disclosure relates generally to console arrangements for motor vehicles, and more particularly to a vehicle console having a tray with an accessible cup holder. Background Motor vehicles are often equipped with a storage compartment, such as a console. For example, a center console is typically installed between a driver seat and a passenger seat in front seats in passenger motor vehicles. The center console typically has a main storage compartment with a lid (which also serves as a armrest) and may include one or more beverage holders and storage trays. It is desirable to provide a center console that provides a tray that enhances the usability of the cup holder. Disclosure of Invention According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, a vehicle console includes a housing having a side wall defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size, the top access opening having a first length, and a cover coupled to the housing and movable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second dimension and a second length, the second length being less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and is configured with a cup holder positioned below the exposed open top such that a container is exposed when placed in the cup holder. Embodiments of the first aspect of the present disclosure may include any one or combination of the following features: -the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening; -the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing; -the tray comprises one or more open tray portions; -the first tray comprises a first open tray portion and a second open tray portion; -a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and movable to a position below the lid; -the second tray is supported on a rail near the top access opening; -the first tray is supported on the bottom of the storage compartment; The top access opening and the lid are substantially rectangular, and -The console is a central console configured to be positioned between the first seat and the second seat. According to a second aspect of the present disclosure, a vehicle has a first seat, a second seat spaced apart from the first seat, and a center console located between the first seat and the second seat. The center console includes a housing having a side wall defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size, the top access opening having a first length, and a cover coupled to the housing and movable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second dimension and a second length, the second length being less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and is configured with a cup holder positioned below the exposed open top such that a container is exposed when placed in the cup holder. Embodiments of the second aspect of the present disclosure may include any one or combination of the following features: -the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening; -the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing; -the tray comprises one or more open tray portions; -the first tray comprises a first open tray portion and a second open tray portion; -a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and movable to a position below the lid; -the second tray is supported on a rail near the top access opening; -the first tray is supported on the bottom of the storage compartment; The top access opening and the lid are substantially rectangular, and -The console is a central console configured to be positioned between the first seat and the second seat.
