Description
Automatic notification for vehicle events Cross Reference to Related Applications The present application claims priority from U.S. provisional patent application No. 63/717,140, filed on 6 at 11 at 2024, which is expressly incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Introduction to the invention The present disclosure relates to vehicle notification features, and more particularly to providing automatic communication from a vehicle in the event of a stop event, a thermal event, or a thermal propagation event. Disclosure of Invention As vehicles become more complex, the number and types of problems, faults, and other safety hazards continue to increase. For example, as vehicles begin to rely more on electric propulsion systems, vehicle batteries become more important to vehicle operation. Depending on the type and severity of the vehicle event, it may be useful to notify emergency services. In addition, it may be useful to alert vehicle occupants of vehicle events and actions that the vehicle occupants should perform (e.g., stay in the vehicle, leave the vehicle, turn off certain vehicle functions, etc.). In view of these problems, embodiments of the present disclosure provide systems, methods, and apparatus for automatically calling emergency services in certain situations. For example, if a vehicle event is detected that includes a stop event, a thermal event, or a thermal propagation event, the vehicle may automatically call the appropriate authorities to address the detected vehicle event. In addition, the vehicle may alert the occupant of the appropriate action to be taken. For example, if a thermal event is detected with respect to a battery or power electronics (e.g., a fire is detected), the vehicle may automatically initiate a call to alert the fire department, and may instruct the vehicle occupants to park alongside and leave the vehicle. Alternatively, if a stop event (e.g., an emergency stop event) is detected in which the vehicle is expecting or has lost propulsion, the vehicle may automatically initiate a call to alert the police and may instruct the vehicle occupants to move to the roadside and remain in the vehicle, if possible. Accordingly, disclosed herein are methods and systems for enabling automatic communication with an appropriate regulatory agency based on detection of a vehicle event. An example method includes detecting a vehicle event using one or more vehicle sensors of a vehicle. The method also includes identifying an event type and an event level based on data from the one or more vehicle sensors. And based on the identified event type and the identified event level, the method includes automatically sending a message from the vehicle to the authority and outputting an alert to a user of the vehicle indicating corrective action based on the event type and the event level. In some embodiments, the identified event type comprises a stop event and the regulatory agency comprises a police department. Corrective actions include indicating that the vehicle is parked alongside and that any passengers remain in the vehicle. That is, when a stopping event (e.g., loss of power, loss of steering, etc.) is detected, the vehicle may automatically transmit a message to the police, and an alert may be provided inside the vehicle indicating that the vehicle occupant is stopped alongside and left inside the vehicle. In some embodiments, the identified event type comprises a thermal event or a heat propagation event, and the regulatory agency comprises a fire department. Corrective actions include indicating that the vehicle is parked alongside and indicating that any passengers are leaving the vehicle. That is, when a thermal event (e.g., a thermal reading outside of a nominal range) or a thermal propagation event (e.g., propagation of a thermal event through the vehicle) is detected, the vehicle may automatically transmit a message to the fire department and an alert may be provided inside the vehicle indicating that the vehicle occupant is stopped alongside and away from the vehicle. In some embodiments, the method further includes detecting a system fault via one or more vehicle sensors, and determining a type of system fault based on data from the one or more vehicle sensors. In some embodiments, the type of system failure includes a critical failure. When a system failure is a critical failure, data from one or more vehicle sensors may indicate a loss of vehicle power or a loss of vehicle steering. In other embodiments, the type of system failure includes thermal failure. In the event that the type of system failure is a thermal failure, data from one or more vehicle sensors may indicate thermal measurements outside of a nominal range. In other embodiments, the type of system failure includes a heat propagation failure. In this case, data from one or more vehicle sensors may indicate heat propagation through the vehicle based on a plurality of spaced-apart sensor measurements that a
