Abstract
A battery module for a haul truck. A battery module for a heavy equipment vehicle (e.g., a mining truck) is presented herein. The battery module may include a plurality of battery trays, each of which includes a plurality of battery packs. The battery module may further include a cooling piping system and a battery wiring system, each connected in parallel to the battery layers. The battery module may have a cell design to reduce weight and manufacturing costs.

Claims (20)
- 1. A vehicle having a layered battery module, the vehicle comprising: A first wheel coupled to a first side of the chassis at a first forward position; A second wheel coupled to the first side of the chassis at a first rearward position; A support structure for a battery module coupled to the first side of the chassis at a location between the first wheel and the second wheel, the battery module including a plurality of battery layers in a vertical arrangement, each battery layer of the plurality of battery layers including at least one battery, wherein each battery layer of the plurality of battery layers includes a tray operating wire coupled to each battery of the at least one battery of the corresponding battery layer and each tray operating wire extending to a first end of the battery module, and A vertical operating cable extending vertically along at least a portion of the first end of the battery module to a first access point; Wherein the first access point is positioned within an access zone defined after the first round.
- 2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein each battery layer comprises a plurality of battery packs, and each tray line couples each of the plurality of battery packs of the corresponding battery layer in series.
- 3. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein each battery layer comprises a plurality of battery packs, and each tray operating line couples each battery pack of the plurality of battery packs of the corresponding battery layer in parallel.
- 4. A vehicle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein each tray operation line and the vertical operation cable are electronic cables.
- 5. The vehicle of claim 4, wherein each tray operating wire is coupled to the vertical operating cable through a high voltage electrical interface box.
- 6. A vehicle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first access point is a high voltage electrical box.
- 7. A vehicle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first access point is located on an upper mounting surface of the battery module.
- 8. A vehicle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein each tray handling line and the vertical handling cable are cooling lines.
- 9. A vehicle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the access point is accessible from the access zone via a removable service panel of the battery module.
- 10. A battery module for a vehicle, the battery module comprising: A front panel; A rear panel disposed opposite to the front panel; a first side panel extending between the front panel and the rear panel, the first side panel having a first service access, and A plurality of battery layers vertically arranged within the front panel, the rear panel, and the first side panel, each battery layer of the plurality of battery layers comprising a battery, wherein each battery layer of the plurality of battery layers comprises a tray operating line removably coupled to the battery and accessible via the first service access to disconnect the tray operating line from the battery.
- 11. The battery module of claim 10, wherein the service access is one of a door, an entrance, or a baffle.
- 12. The battery module of claim 10, further comprising: a second side panel extending between the front panel and the rear panel opposite the first side panel; a top panel extending between the front panel, the rear panel, the first side panel, and the second side panel, and A second access corresponding to one of the front panel, the rear panel, the second side panel, and the top panel.
- 13. The battery module of claim 10, wherein the tray line extends to a first end of the battery module.
- 14. The battery module of claim 13, further comprising a vertical operating cable extending vertically along at least a portion of the first end of the battery module to a third access.
- 15. The battery module of claim 10, wherein each battery layer comprises a plurality of battery packs, and the tray operation line couples each battery pack of the plurality of battery packs of the corresponding battery layer in series.
- 16. The battery module of claim 10, wherein each battery layer comprises a plurality of battery packs, and the tray operation line couples each battery pack of the plurality of battery packs of the corresponding battery layer in parallel.
- 17. The battery module of claim 10, wherein the tray operating wire is an electronic cable.

The battery module of any one of claims 10 to 17, wherein the tray operation line comprises: A layer supply branch cooling line fluidly coupled to a layer supply cooling line corresponding to a battery layer of the plurality of battery layers, and A layer return branch cooling line fluidly coupled to a layer return cooling line corresponding to the battery layers of the plurality of battery layers.

The battery module of claim 18, wherein the battery layers comprise a plurality of battery packs, a plurality of layer supply branch cooling lines, and a plurality of layer return branch cooling lines such that: Each layer supply branch cooling line of the plurality of layer supply branch cooling lines corresponds to one battery pack of the plurality of battery packs; each layer return branch cooling line of the plurality of layer return branch cooling lines corresponds to one battery pack of the plurality of battery packs; the layer supply cooling line is fluidly coupled to each layer supply branch cooling line of the plurality of layer supply branch cooling lines, and The tier return cooling line is fluidly coupled to each tier return branch cooling line of the plurality of tier return branch cooling lines.
- 20. The battery module of claim 18, further comprising: a primary cooling supply line fluidly coupled to a coolant fluid source and the layer supply cooling line, and A primary cooling return line fluidly coupled to the layer supply cooling line.
Description
Battery module for haul truck Technical Field The present disclosure relates generally to a battery module for a haul truck (e.g., a mining truck). In particular, the present disclosure relates to a battery module including a cell structure and a plurality of battery layers. Background Large utility vehicles, such as haul trucks, mining vehicles, cranes, bulldozers, etc., may require large power supplies to accommodate the workload and/or absolute size of the vehicle. Large utility vehicles may be equipped with a battery pack to increase peak power output during ascent, assist in disconnection, recover energy when descending, and otherwise provide power to the engine. Due to the size of large utility vehicles, a significant battery system is required to operate the large utility vehicle. The large battery pack systems necessary to accommodate the power requirements of operation can be heavy and difficult to install in size onto standard vehicle structures. Disclosure of Invention The present disclosure provides a layered battery module configured for mounting on a mining truck. The layered battery module includes a support structure including a first support beam and a second support beam each including a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, a distal end of the vertical portion being coupled to a distal end of the horizontal portion such that an angle is defined between the vertical portion and the horizontal portion, a first side plate coupled to the vertical portion of the first support beam and the horizontal portion of the first support beam, a second side plate coupled to the vertical portion of the second support beam and the horizontal portion of the second support beam, the second side plate positioned opposite the first side plate, and a plurality of battery layers defined between the first side plate and the second side plate. In another embodiment, the layered battery module further comprises a plurality of battery trays. Each of the plurality of battery trays is removably coupled to a corresponding one of the plurality of battery layers. In another embodiment, each battery tray of the plurality of battery trays includes a battery tray surface and at least one battery pack coupled to the battery tray surface. Each battery tray of the plurality of battery trays is configured to slide on a sliding surface of the corresponding one of the plurality of battery layers. In addition, the layered battery module further includes a first end plate coupled to the distal end of the battery tray surface and a second end plate coupled to the proximal end of the battery tray surface such that the first end plate and the second end plate extend in a direction perpendicular to the battery tray surface. Further, each of the plurality of battery trays includes three battery packs. In yet another embodiment, the sliding surface of each of the plurality of battery layers includes a first support rail connected to and extending the length of the first side plate, and a second support rail connected to and opposite and parallel to the first support rail, the second support rail extending the length of the second side plate. Further, each of the plurality of battery trays is configured to slide onto the first and second support rails of a corresponding battery layer of the plurality of battery layers. In yet another embodiment, the layered battery tray further comprises a top reinforcing tray coupled to an upper portion of each of the first side plate and the second side plate. In a different embodiment, the layered battery tray further includes a first mounting pin coupled to a proximal end of the vertical portion of the first support beam and a second mounting pin coupled to a proximal end of the vertical portion of the second support beam. In another embodiment, the layered battery tray further includes a back panel extending between the first side panel and the second side panel, the back panel including a mounting bracket configured to couple to a lower mount of the mining truck. In another embodiment, the plurality of battery layers includes seven battery layers. In another embodiment, each of the first side plate and the second side plate includes a bottom mounting surface on a bottom of the first side plate and the second side plate and an upper mounting surface on an upper portion of the first side plate and the second side plate. Further, at least one of a splash guard, a flashing, and a fluid seal is removably coupled to at least one of the bottom mounting surface and the upper mounting surface. In addition, the layered battery module further includes a top mounting surface connected to a top of each of the first side plate, the second side plate, and the back plate extending between the first side plate and the second side plate, the top being located above each of an upper portion of the first side plate and the second side plate and an upper portion of the back plate.
