Description
Surfactants for agricultural formulations Technical Field The present invention relates to the field of agriculture, in particular crop nutrition and protection and more particularly to fertilising and plant protection compositions and even more particularly to plant quarantine and nutritional products for aerial and foliar applications. Background Fertilizers, phytosanitary products such as pesticides, nematicides, herbicides, fungicides and other agricultural products are commonly applied directly to crops as aqueous solutions or suspensions by spraying. Additives (adjuvants) are often required to improve the efficacy, effectiveness and wettability of these products. Additives are also often used to improve or increase the stability of the mixtures comprising them. For decades, these additives have been well known and documented in the art, but recent developments have tended to use more effective and environmentally friendly additives. Thus, the use of alkoxylated (ethoxylated) alcohols as additives in foliar applications (for fertilizers or for phytosanitary products) is now quite common, and some patents, scientific publications and books mention the use of nonionic surfactants as additives (adjuvants) for formulations for agricultural foliar applications. For reference, v.fernandez et al (in "Foliar Fertilization, SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES AND FIELD PRACTICES", IFA, paris, france, 2013) point out on page 38 that the most common hydrophilic polar groups in nonionic surfactants are based on ethylene oxide in combination with fatty alcohol ethoxylates, and the like. However, there is no well established relationship between chemical nature, hydrophilicity, lipophilicity and phytotoxicity of the compounds. The work in J.HAZEN in "Adjuvants: terminology, classification AND CHEMISTRY", wire Technology, volume 14, (2000), 773-784 provides specific definitions of surfactants and wetting agents and mentions the most commonly used chemicals, such as ethoxylated molecules, including nonylphenol compounds, fatty amine compounds and isotridecyl alcohol with 6 mol ethylene oxide. The patent literature lists a large amount of information about wetting agents for agricultural use, among which patent EP1006792B1 can be mentioned. This patent discloses agrochemical concentrate formulations comprising an alkoxylated adjuvant, such as an alkoxylated C 8-C22 alcohol, in particular an alkoxylated C 13-C15 alcohol, as well as sorbitan derivatives and even ethoxylated trisiloxanes. Patent EP 1273230B 1 also relates to a wetting agent composition for agrochemicals and discloses an agrochemical spreading composition comprising a surfactant (a) and a surfactant (B) having specific melting points, the surfactant (a) being selected from polyoxyalkylene alkyl ethers, polyoxyalkylene alkylphenyl ethers, polyoxyalkylene polyol fatty acid esters, polyoxyalkylene alkylamines, alkyl polyglycosides and glycidyl ethers. Document US 9456600B 2 describes agrochemical spreading agent compositions containing a polysaccharide, a polyoxyalkylene sorbitan fatty acid ester and at least one nonionic surfactant selected from polyoxyalkylene alkyl ethers, sorbitan fatty acid esters and silicone surfactants. The agrochemical spreading agent composition may further comprise a polyol solvent and a glycol ether solvent. Document US 10111420B 2 discloses a wetting composition, for example for seeds or plant leaves, comprising a C 5-C12 alcohol and a surfactant, for example a C 6-C15 branched or linear aliphatic alcohol ethoxylate. Document WO2021074547A1 relates to detergent formulations comprising at least one secondary alcohol alkoxylate, and the use of said secondary alcohol alkoxylate as a surfactant with improved hydrotropic capacity (i.e. improved solvent solubilising properties). Document WO2009155187 A1 relates to cleaning compositions comprising mid-range alkoxylated surfactants or mixtures of alkoxylated surfactants, and their use as cleaners for triglycerides and cross-linked triglycerides, formulation stabilizers, agents for super-concentrated cleaning formulations, pre-cleaners, detergents, agricultural adjuvants, hard surface cleaners and emulsifiers. The document WO2012052545 A2 relates to the use of alkoxylated aliphatic alcohols for reducing the viscosity of aqueous agrochemical concentrates. Despite all of these general teachings regarding various additives useful in the agricultural field, there remains a need for specific additives that are capable of improving the effectiveness, effectiveness and wettability of aerial and foliar fertilisers and phytosanitary formulations. Aqueous solutions of agricultural products, such as pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, nematicides, fertilizers, biostimulants, and the like, are typically applied directly to crop leaves and/or seeds and/or soil. All parts of crops and plants, such as leaves, as well as seeds and soil, are often hydrophobic, which means that it may be difficult to wet them with aqueo
