Description

Wet pet food system Cross Reference to Related Applications The present application claims the benefit and priority of U.S. provisional application serial No. 63/592,640 filed on 24, 10, 2023, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background The preparation and packaging of wet pet foods with reasonably long shelf lives can be a challenge, particularly when the package may have some permeability to water and/or oxygen during storage. For example, wet pet food may oxidize, particularly at the surface of the wet pet food that is in direct contact with the packaging material. The solution is to use a multi-layer bag or pouch with oxygen and/or moisture vapor barriers, such as a thin layer of aluminum, for example sometimes referred to as an aluminum bag. However, aluminum bags and other bags of multiple materials can be difficult to recycle due to the compounding of the various layers into a unified layer. On the other hand, the challenges associated with their permeability to various gases (such as oxygen and/or water vapor) are presented by the selection of a single recyclable material for use as a bag or container. Detailed Description In accordance with the present disclosure, a pet food system may include a sealed pouch constructed of a single layer of polypropylene and a wet pet food contained within the sealed pouch. The wet pet food may be in the form of a member selected from the group consisting of mousse, nuggets in cake and nuggets in puree. In addition, the wet pet food may contain antioxidants, including soy sauce. In some examples, the sealed bag may be recyclable. In other examples, the sealed pouch does not include an additional fluid barrier to help reduce oxygen or water penetration into the sealed pouch. Thus, the presence of soy sauce provides long-term storage protection even when the sealed pouch is more permeable to oxygen and water than the aluminum barrier pouch, while the wet pet food is contained within the sealed pouch. For example, the wet pet food may be shelf stable within the sealed pouch for at least about nine months (or much longer). In other examples, the soy sauce may be included in the wet pet food from about 0.1wt% to about 3wt% based on the weight of the dehydrated soy sauce within the total weight of the wet pet food. Alternatively, soy sauce may be added to the wet pet food from about 0.25% to about 2% by weight based on the weight of the dehydrated soy sauce within the total weight of the wet pet food. In other examples, the wet pet food may include from about 40% to about 80% by weight water based on the total weight of the wet pet food. In more specific examples, the wet pet food may be in the form of chunks in puree, and the chunks in puree may include chunks (such as protein-containing chunks) and puree present in a sealed pouch in a weight ratio of about 1:1 to about 1:4 or in a weight ratio of about 2:3 to about 1:3. For example, the nuggets may comprise from about 30% to about 80% by weight of a protein, such as an animal-based protein and/or a plant-based protein, e.g., a plant protein extract. In other examples, the antioxidants present in the wet pet food may consist of or consist essentially of soy sauce. In other examples, the wet pet food may include maillard reaction precursors or ingredients and a catalyst. A method of packaging a wet pet food may include preparing a wet pet food comprising a member selected from the group consisting of mousse, nuggets in a cake, and nuggets in a puree. The wet pet food product prepared may also contain antioxidants, including soy sauce. In addition, the method may include enclosing the wet pet food in a sealed pouch constructed of a single layer of polypropylene. In some examples, soy sauce may be included in the wet pet food in a concentration sufficient to substantially counteract visible oxidation that would otherwise be caused by the oxygen and water permeability of the sealed pouch. In other examples, preparing the wet pet food may include adding from about 0.1 wt% to about 3 wt% soy sauce in the form of dehydrated particulates based on the total weight of the wet pet food. In other examples, no other antioxidants than soy sauce are added to the wet pet food. In still other examples, the wet pet food may be in the form of chunks in the puree, and may be prepared by mixing the chunks with the puree in a weight ratio of from about 1:1 to about 1:4. In this example, the concentrate may comprise water, a thickener and an antioxidant (which includes at least soy sauce). It should be noted that when discussing examples relating to the wet pet food systems and methods of packaging wet pet food described herein, such discussions may be considered to apply to each other whether or not explicitly discussed in the context of the examples. Thus, for example, when "sealed pouches" are discussed in the context of a wet pet food system, such disclosure is also relevant to and directly supp
