Abstract
Systems, devices, and methods for delivering energy to a patient to treat a medical condition are provided. A system for delivering energy to a patient includes a treatment device having one or more energy delivery elements. The treatment device may deliver energy, such as ultrasound energy, to a target location of the patient via the one or more energy delivery elements. Energy delivery to a target site treats a medical condition of a patient.

Claims (20)
- 1. A system for delivering energy to a patient, the system comprising: A treatment device comprising one or more energy delivery elements, wherein the treatment device is configured to deliver energy to a target location of the patient via the one or more energy delivery elements, Wherein the delivery of energy to the target location treats a medical condition of the patient.
- 2. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more of the other claims herein, wherein the target location comprises a location of the brain of the patient.
- 3. The system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the treatment device is configured to deliver energy to an anatomical location of the patient selected from the group consisting of brain, heart, liver, pancreas, spleen, dorsal root ganglion, spinal cord, peripheral nerve, and combinations thereof.
- 4. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the treatment device is configured to deliver ultrasonic energy.
- 5. A system according to claim 4 and/or any one or more other claims herein wherein the therapeutic device is configured to further deliver magnetic field energy.
- 6. A system according to claim 5 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the magnetic field comprises a magnetic field of at least 0.5T.
- 7. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the treatment device is configured to deliver one, two or more energies selected from the group consisting of acoustic energy, such as ultrasonic energy, optical energy, such as laser energy, thermal energy, such as thermal energy and/or cryogenic energy, electromagnetic energy, such as radio frequency energy, microwave energy and/or electroporation energy, chemical energy, mechanical energy, and combinations thereof.
- 8. The system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the target location spans up to 10 mm, and wherein the system is configured to accurately deliver the energy into the target location.
- 9. A system according to claim 8 and/or any one or more of the other claims herein, wherein the target location spans up to 5mm.
- 10. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the treatment device is configured to deliver the energy with a spatial resolution of no more than 1.0 mm and a temporal accuracy of no more than 5 μs.
- 11. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein wherein the one or more energy delivery elements comprise a plurality of energy delivery elements arranged in one or more spherical focusing arrays.
- 12. A system according to claim 11 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the one or more spherical focusing arrays each comprise a radius of at least 10 mm, no more than 5,000 mm, or both.
- 13. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the treatment device comprises a first treatment component configured to deliver energy and positioned on a right side of the patient's head and a second treatment component configured to deliver energy and positioned on a left side of the patient's head.
- 14. A system according to claim 13 and/or any one or more other claims herein, further comprising a housing configured to position the first and second therapeutic components such that the therapeutic components each deliver the energy through a temporal bone window of the patient's skull.
- 15. The system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the system is configured to deliver energy to a plurality of different target locations deep in the brain without moving the treatment device and without moving the patient's head.
- 16. The system of claim 15 and/or any one or more of the other claims herein, wherein the system is configured to deliver energy to at least the first target location and the second target location in a sequential arrangement.
- 17. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the system comprises a housing and a patient mask that are collectively configured to reproducibly position the patient's head in a desired arrangement for delivery of energy without guidance using MRI.
- 18. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, wherein the system is configured to verify targeting of energy delivery via use of MRI blood oxygen dependent imaging.
- 19. The system of claim 18 and/or any one or more of the other claims herein, wherein the image provides target location guidance information, dosimetry information, or both.
- 20. A system according to claim 1 and/or any one or more other claims herein, further comprising an algorithm configured to determine energy delivery drive signals that compensate for one or more obstacles present in an energy delivery path from the treatment device to the target location.

Technical Field The present inventive concept relates generally to systems, devices, and methods for applying and modulating ultrasound to a specific target in a human brain. Background Many patients exhibiting undesirable mental and neurological conditions are resistant to treatment. Current neuromodulation methods have limited success. There is a need for improved brain modulation systems and methods. Disclosure of Invention According to one aspect of the inventive concept, a system for delivering energy to a patient includes a treatment device including one or more energy delivery array elements. The treatment device is configured to deliver energy to a target location of the patient via the one or more energy delivery array elements. Energy delivery to a target site treats a medical condition of a patient. In some embodiments, the target location comprises a location of the brain of the patient. In some embodiments, the treatment device is configured to deliver energy to an anatomical location of the patient selected from the group consisting of brain, heart, liver, pancreas, spleen, dorsal root ganglion, spinal cord, peripheral nerve, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the treatment device is configured to deliver ultrasonic energy. The therapeutic device may be configured to further deliver magnetic field energy. The magnetic field may include a magnetic field of at least 0.5T. In some embodiments, the treatment device is configured to deliver one, two, or more energies selected from the group consisting of acoustic energy, such as ultrasonic energy, optical energy, such as laser energy, thermal energy, such as thermal energy and/or cryogenic energy, electromagnetic energy, such as radio frequency energy, microwave energy, and/or electroporation energy, chemical energy, mechanical energy, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the target location spans up to 10mm, and the system is configured to accurately deliver the energy into the target location. The target location may span up to 5mm. In some embodiments, the therapeutic device is configured to deliver the energy with a spatial resolution of no more than 1.0 mm and a temporal accuracy of no more than 5 μs. In some embodiments, the one or more energy delivery elements comprise a plurality of energy delivery elements arranged in one or more spherical focusing arrays. The one or more spherical focusing arrays may each comprise a radius of at least 10 mm, no more than 5,000 mm, or both. In some embodiments, the treatment device includes a first treatment assembly configured to deliver energy and positioned on the right side of the patient's head and a second treatment assembly configured to deliver energy and positioned on the left side of the patient's head.
