Description

Container rotator with dust suppression Technical Field The present invention relates to container spinners for handling bulk materials, and in particular to container spinners provided with dust suppression systems. Background Container rotation systems are increasingly used in the field of bulk cargo handling operations. In these systems, a set of containers is used with a container rotation device, particularly in the operation of loading bulk material into the hull of a ship. In these operations, the container rotation device is suspended from the quay crane and controlled by a control system, which is operated by the quay crane operator. The container rotation means are used to sequentially grasp the filled containers, bring them over the loading hatch of the hull of the ship, and then rotate the containers to pour the contents of the containers into the cargo hold of the ship. Depending on the type of material being processed, the operation of the dump vessel may generate airborne dust. Attempts have been made to suppress air dust generated during these operations by mating water jet or spray arrangements with hatches in which the material is loaded. However, such systems have the disadvantage that they need to be installed on each hatch in use, and they also rely on the water supply at the dock, which is not always possible or convenient to arrange. The present invention aims to improve dust suppression measures when loading bulk materials. Disclosure of Invention In a first aspect, the present invention provides a container rotation device for use in handling bulk material, the container rotation device comprising a frame attachable to a quay crane or other lifting device, a container rotation mechanism mounted to the frame and configured to selectively engage and rotate the container to dump the contents of the container, and an arrangement of liquid spray outlets mounted on the device for generating a liquid spray to inhibit dust during a container tilting operation. The arrangement of the ejection outlets may be mounted to the frame of the device. The device may be elongate and the ejection outlets are provided in separate rows at both sides of the device, which may be operated according to the direction of the tilting operation. The device may further comprise a valve control arrangement configured to selectively activate the rows of injection outlets depending on the direction of rotation of the tilting operation. During the container tilting operation, the angular orientation of at least some of the injection outlets may be controllable. The spray outlets may include a spray-type outlet and a fan-type outlet, which may be selectively operated during a spraying operation. The device may comprise one or more reservoirs for storing liquid to be ejected from the ejection outlet. Drawings Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a container for use with a container rotation device; FIG. 2 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a container rotation device; FIG. 3 is a top view of the container rotation device of FIG. 2; FIG. 4 is a side view of the container rotation device of FIG. 2, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the container rotation device of fig. 2. Detailed Description Referring to fig. 1, a cargo container rotating apparatus 10 for operating a prior art cargo container 100 having a cover 102 is shown. The apparatus 10 is sold under the trademark ROTAINER ® by container rotation solutions private company (Container Rotation Solutions Pty Ltd) (www.rotainer.com). The apparatus 10 comprises a main body 20 and a container engagement arrangement for engagement with a cargo container, the container engagement arrangement being in the form of two arms 22, each pivotally mounted to the body 20 and each equipped with a pair of twist locks which engage in a known manner with twist lock recesses provided at the top corners of the container 100. The arm 22 is associated with a hydraulic actuator (not visible) operable to rotate the arm relative to the body 20. The apparatus 10 further comprises a container lid lifting mechanism in the form of a lid lifting assembly 24, the lid lifting assembly 24 being associated with the body for engagement with a lid 102 of the container 100, and being further associated with a plurality of hydraulic actuators arranged to move the lid lifting assembly 24 between a raised position and a lowered position, thereby moving the lid of the container between a closed state and an open state, as will be described later. The body 10 may be attached to lifting means in the form of a quay crane by attaching chains to the eyelet 30 so that the combination of the treatment device 10 container 100 and cover 102 may be lifted off the ground and moved to different positions in the area. A cargo handling device known as ROTAINER ® is commonly used for loading opera
