Description

Use of xyloglucanases for replacing optical brighteners Reference to sequence Listing The present application comprises a sequence listing in computer readable form, which is incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field The present invention relates to detergent compositions having improved sustainability wherein the level of optical brighteners is reduced, either partially or completely, by the use of one or more xyloglucanases. The invention further relates to compositions, such as cleaning compositions comprising a mixture of enzymes. The invention further relates to the use of a composition comprising such an enzyme in a cleaning process and/or for deep cleaning of organic soils, a method for removing or reducing components of organic matter. Background Enzymes have been used in detergents for decades. Typically, a mixture of enzymes is added to the detergent composition. The enzyme mixture typically comprises a plurality of enzymes, each of which is individually targeted to its specific substrate, e.g., amylase active on starch stains, protease active on protein stains, etc. Textile surfaces and hard surfaces (such as the interior space of a dishwasher) soiled with many different types of soils (which may consist of proteins, grease, starch, etc.) are subjected to several wash cycles. Optical Brighteners (OBAs) or fluorescent brighteners (FWAs) are colorless to weakly colored organic compounds that absorb ultraviolet light in solution or when applied to a substrate and re-emit a large portion of the absorbed energy in the form of bluish violet light between 400 nm and 500 nm. These compounds are included in commercial detergent formulations to increase whiteness and darken color. The ability of the detergent to release and retain soil in suspension is critical to its efficiency. Particulate soils not suspended by the detergent will redeposit on the fabric. Redeposited soils are generally known to be more difficult to remove than original soils, in part because of their smaller particle size. Detergent compositions have been described, but there is a continuing need for more sustainable detergent compositions in which enzymes retain activity and improved sustainability (whiteness) characteristics that can be achieved by adding enzymes to replace optical brighteners in detergents, either partially or even completely. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide such a detergent composition.
