Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods, components, devices, and systems for fractional bandwidth feedback for 480MHz and 640MHz transmissions in Wi-Fi. Some aspects relate more particularly to including in a Null Data Packet (NDP) announcement frame a partial bandwidth information field indicating which frequency portions of a 480MHz or 640MHz channel bandwidth to generate channel information feedback. In some examples, a receiving device (e.g., a Station (STA)) may perform channel estimation on an NDP and send a beamforming report to a transmitting device (e.g., an Access Point (AP)) based on the NDP. The transmitting device schedules NDP using an NDP announcement frame, which includes a partial bandwidth information field. The partial bandwidth information field in the NDP announcement frame may include a frequency resolution field and a bitmap having a value and a length of 480MHz or 640MHz based on a channel bandwidth.

  1. 1. Partial bandwidth feedback for 480MHz/640MHz transmissions in Wi-Fi Cross reference This patent application claims priority from U.S. patent application Ser. No. 18/356,141, entitled "PARTIAL BANDWIDTH FEEDBACK FOR 480/640MHz TRANSMISSION IN WI-FI (partial Bandwidth feedback for 480MHz/640MHz transmission in Wi-Fi)" filed by Chen et al at 2023, 7, 20, which is assigned to the assignee of the present application and expressly incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field The present disclosure relates to wireless communications, and more particularly to fractional bandwidth feedback for 480 megahertz (MHz) and/or 640MHz transmissions in Wi-Fi. Background A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) may be formed of one or more wireless Access Points (APs) that provide a shared wireless communication medium for use by a plurality of client devices, also referred to as wireless Stations (STAs). The basic building block of WLANs conforming to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 family of standards is the Basic Service Set (BSS) managed by an AP. Each BSS is identified by a Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID) advertised by the AP. The AP periodically broadcasts beacon frames to enable any STA within wireless range of the AP to establish or maintain a communication link with the WLAN. In some WLANs, wireless communication devices, such as STAs and APs, transmit and receive wireless communications to and from each other in the form of a physical layer (PHY) protocol data unit (PPDU). PPDUs conforming to IEEE 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ax, and 802.11be standards revisions may be transmitted over 2.4 gigahertz (GHz), 5GHz, or 6GHz frequency bands. Each frequency band may include multiple channels. Currently, 20 megahertz (MHz), 40MHz, 80MHz, 160MHz, and 360MHz channels may be used, and the channels are defined by a center frequency index and an operating bandwidth (e.g., 20MHz, 40MHz, 80MHz, 160MHz, and 360 MHz). A receiving device (e.g., STA) may perform channel estimation for an empty data packet (NDP) and send a feedback report (e.g., a beamforming report) to a transmitting device (e.g., AP) based on measurements performed according to the NDP. The transmitting device may select a beam for transmitting the PPDU to the receiving device based on the beamforming report. The transmitting device schedules NDPs using NDP announcement frames. Disclosure of Invention The systems, methods, and devices of the present disclosure each have some innovative aspects, no single one of which is solely responsible for the desirable attributes disclosed herein. A method for wireless communication by a wireless communication device is described. The method may include receiving a Null Data Packet (NDP) announcement (NDPA) frame including a partial bandwidth information field including a first set of bits indicating a frequency resolution and a second set of bits including a feedback bitmap indicating one or more portions of a channel bandwidth over which feedback is to be provided according to the frequency resolution, wherein a value of the first set of bits and a number of bits in the second set of bits are one of 480MHz or 640MHz based on the channel bandwidth, receiving an NDP according to the NDPA frame, and transmitting a feedback report based on the NDP and the partial bandwidth information field. A wireless communication device for wireless communication is described. The wireless communication device may include a processing system including a processor circuit and a memory circuit storing code, the processing system configured to cause the wireless communication device to receive an NDPA frame including a partial bandwidth information field including a first set of bits indicating a frequency resolution and a second set of bits including a feedback bitmap indicating one or more portions of a channel bandwidth over which feedback is to be provided according to the frequency resolution, wherein a value of the first set of bits and a number of bits in the second set of bits are one of 480MHz or 640MHz based on the channel bandwidth, receive an NDP from the NDPA frame, and transmit a feedback report based on the NDP and the partial bandwidth information field.
