Description

The invention relates to a method for operating a display system, in which a control unit of the display system activates and deactivates a light source of a projector of the display system at a repetition frequency, the control unit opens and closes a light valve of a disc of the display system synchronously with the activation and deactivation of the light source, and light emitted by the activated light source and diffusely reflected from a projection surface of the display system passes through the open light valve. The invention further relates to a display system and a vehicle. Methods of the type mentioned above, in various forms, are part of the state of the art and serve to control light passing through the disc depending on light emitted by the projector. The light valve can be designed as a layer arranged on the surface of the otherwise transparent disc or integrated into the disc, the transparency of which varies with an applied electrical voltage. For example, the layer can be opaque when no electrical voltage is applied and transparent when a predetermined electrical voltage is applied, or vice versa. The term "shutter" is also commonly used for the light valve. WO 95/15062 A1 Disclosing a method based on synchronization with a light source, used to separate the red, green, and blue color components of an image, the process involves a light source emitting a sequence of red, green, and blue light, each diffusely reflected by an object. A CCD sensor detecting the diffusely reflected light is read out synchronously with the sequence and successively captures a red image, a green image, and a blue image of the object. DE 10 2014 015791 A1 describes a method in which a light valve of a vehicle's lighting system is synchronized with a light source of the lighting system that temporally separates red, green and blue color components in order to adjust a color temperature of light from the light source diffusely reflected from the vehicle's environment. EP 1 275 556 A2 describes a vehicle with a display system that is also operated in such a manner to selectively prevent light emitted by oncoming vehicles from passing through the vehicle's windshield by means of a light valve synchronized with a headlight of the vehicle, thereby reducing the glare effect of oncoming traffic on the driver of the vehicle. Out of DE 10 2006 024 004 A1 A method is known in which a light valve matrix is used to selectively reduce the glare effect of a headlight of an oncoming vehicle or a low sun. However, this method cannot be used to project an informative display onto a section of the road in front of the vehicle using the headlight. This is because the headlight is required to illuminate the road section evenly with white light. Thus reveals DE 10 2019 129 397 A1 a vehicle with a normal, regulation headlight and additionally a projector different from the headlight, which is designed to project a colored informative display content onto a section of the roadway. It is therefore an object of the invention to propose a method for operating a display system that enables the display of informative content by means of a projection surface uniformly illuminated with white light. Further objects of the invention are to provide a display system and a vehicle. An object of the invention is a method for operating a display system in which a control unit of the display system activates and deactivates a light source of a projector of the display system at a repetition frequency, the control unit opens and closes a light valve of a disk of the display system synchronously with the activation and deactivation of the light source, and light emitted by the activated light source and diffusely reflected from a projection surface of the display system passes through the open light valve. The light source is, for example, designed as a light-emitting diode (LED) or as a matrix arrangement with a plurality of LEDs, each forming a pixel. The light source is not operated continuously. Operation of the light source comprises periods of illumination, beginning with activation, during which the light source emits light, and periods of darkness, beginning with deactivation, during which the light source does not emit light. The periods of illumination and darkness alternate periodically. One period of the light source, which exactly comprises one illumination period of the light source and The reciprocal of the repetition frequency is the interval that exactly includes one period of darkness following the illumination period. Accordingly, the operation of the light valve comprises open periods beginning with the opening, during which the diffusely reflected light passes through the light valve, and closed periods beginning with the closing, during which no light passes through the light valve. One period of the light valve comprises exactly one open period of the light valve and exactly one closing period following the open period, and has th
