Description

WASH COMPOSITION WITH ANIONIC SULFATE AND SULTAINE NOT RELIANT ON PALM KERNEL OIL Field of the Invention The present invention is directed to an isotropic wash composition having a reduced amount or no palm kernel oil derived zwitterionic surfactant. More particularly, the wash composition comprises anionic surfactant where at least 42.5% by weight of the total weight of anionic surfactant used is sulfate-based, and zwitterionic surfactant where at least 27.5% by weight of the total weight of zwitterionic surfactant used is a Ci6-C2o sultaine. The wash composition of the present invention is surprisingly stable and suitable to be formulated substantially free of paraben, hydantoin, isothiazolinone and/or silicone oil. The composition also, and unexpectedly, provides excellent lather and sensory characteristics, even when at least 27.5% of the total amount of zwitterionic surfactant does not comprise C10-C14 hydrophobic chain and the composition is formulated with less than 8% by weight of a sulfated anionic surfactant. Background of the Invention Wash compositions are typically employed to cleanse skin and to reduce shine associated with sebum produced in specialized epithelial cells known as sebocytes. They are also used to minimize bacteria on the hands and face such that washing is viewed as the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. In fact, experts believe that periodic washing throughout the day can reduce the number of consumers catching colds by about 50%. In addition to skin, wash compositions are conventionally used on the scalp and hair and are also used to clean objects within the home, like counters, windows, and fabrics. Consumers prefer compositions that are stable, characteristically lather, especially on the skin and hair, and they also demand compositions that are more favorable to the environment. Particularly, use of less hydrocarbon derived from palm kernel oil is desired since ingredients made with C10-C14 hydrophobic portions (especially C12 hydrophobic portions) can lead to an increase in deforestation. It is of increasing interest to develop wash compositions that are enjoyed by consumers and better for the planet. The present invention, therefore, is directed to a wash composition having a reduced amount or no palm kernel oil derived zwitterionic surfactant. More particularly, the wash composition comprises anionic surfactant where at least 42.5% by weight of the total anionic surfactant used is sulfate-based, and zwitterionic surfactant where at least 27.5% by weight of the total weight of zwitterionic surfactant used is a C16-C20 sultaine. The wash composition of the present invention is surprisingly stable and suitable to be formulated substantially free of paraben, hydantoin, isothiazolinone and/or silicone oil. The composition also, and unexpectedly, provides excellent lather and sensory characteristics, even when the total anionic surfactant is at least 42.5% by weight sulfate-based, and the total amount of zwitterionic surfactant is at least 27% by weight of a C16-C20 sultaine and the composition is formulated with less than 8% by weight of a sulfated anionic surfactant.
