GB-2644650-A - Shredding method, apparatus, and system
Abstract
A method and apparatus for generating black mass by (a) receiving a feedstock 1 of one or more of EV batteries, power electronics batteries, consumer batteries, waste from battery manufacture, or other electrochemical energy storage devices; (b) separating 2 the feedstock into a first stream 3 comprising batteries or other electrochemical energy storage devices and a second stream 5 comprising waste from battery manufacture; c) shredding the first stream in a wet shredder to form a wet shredded stream; d) shredding the second stream in a dry shredder to form a dry shredded stream; e) combining the wet shredded stream and the dry shredded stream to form a combined stream; and f) processing the combined stream to form a black mass stream. The parameters of the battery may be measured. Separate conveyers may be used. Substreams (4, fig 2) may be used. The shredding may be to the same passing size. Wet shredding may include partial submersion. The wet shredding of the battery material abates the risks of flourinated compounds or explosion or fire, and the recombination allows more efficiency processes with higher solids loading than is possible via a wet shredding step.
