Description
In the first aspect, an embodiment of the present invention relates to a microfluidic device for detecting the properties of a fluid, wherein the microfluidic device is A microfluidic channel having an inlet for receiving a fluid plug or an outlet for removing a fluid plug, and a columnar flow distributor for reorienting the fluid plug such that the long axis of the fluid plug is essentially oriented perpendicular (i.e., lateral) to the wall of the microfluidic channel (e.g., an upright side wall), in contrast to its original orientation, and the longer long axis is oriented longitudinally in the narrower inlet channel, wherein the width W of the microfluidic channel is substantially greater than the width w of the inlet or outlet channel. The microfluidic device is adapted to detect the physical or chemical properties of a fluid using at least one detector, and is configured to detect properties in a detection area located across the entire microfluidic channel in the width direction of the microfluidic channel, and is configured to have a detection area located within a distance D from the outlet or inlet of a columnar flow distributor, where the distance D is less than the width W of the microfluidic channel.
