Description

According to one embodiment, a system is provided comprising an elongated body defining a hollow passage through which the elongated body has a cross-sectional circumference that is dimensioned such that (i) a length between 100 and 800 cm and (ii) the largest inscribed circle within the cross-sectional circumference has a diameter between 50 and 300 cm, the elongated body comprising a first opening positioned around the upper longitudinal half of the elongated body and having an area between 300 and 20,000 cm² , and at least two second openings positioned around at least one of a first longitudinal lateral region of the elongated body extending clockwise from approximately 1 o'clock to approximately 5 o'clock of the inscribed circle, and (b) a second longitudinal lateral region of the elongated body extending clockwise from approximately 7 o'clock to approximately 11 o'clock of the inscribed circle, each having an area between 20 and 700 cm² . According to one embodiment, a method for managing the growth of a tree is also provided, the method comprising the step of providing a system including an elongated body defining a hollow passage through which the elongated body has (i) a length between 100 and 800 cm and (ii) a perimeter of a cross section dimensioned such that the largest inscribed circle within the perimeter of the cross section has a diameter between 50 and 300 cm, the elongated body having a first opening positioned around the upper half of the longitudinal direction of the elongated body and having an area between 300 and 20,000 cm² , and at least two second openings positioned around at least one of (a) a first longitudinal side region of the elongated body extending clockwise from approximately 1 o'clock to approximately 5 o'clock of the inscribed circle, and (b) a second longitudinal side region of the elongated body extending clockwise from approximately 7 o'clock to approximately 11 o'clock of the inscribed circle, having an area between 20 and 700 cm². The steps include providing a plant with at least two second openings, each having an area between two of the two openings; positioning the elongated body below the surface such that the first openings are substantially oriented upward; and planting a plant through the first openings.
