Description
As shown in Figure 2, in one embodiment, four braiding bobbins 210, 220, 230, and 240 are prepared in a similar manner and then loaded into a Maypole braiding machine in a balanced quarter- carrier configuration, preferably so that bobbins 210 and 220 move clockwise and bobbins 230 and 240 move counterclockwise in a meandering motion. The braiding machine then forms a spirally intertwined yarn structure with minimal twist and small braiding angles, with mechanically constrained functional components, preferably without the use of a core or mandrel. Any number of such braiding bobbins can be used, and the braiding bobbins may contain the same or different multi-component fiber bundles. One or more other optional bobbins containing only structural material may be optionally additionally loaded into the braiding machine as needed to braid yarn in the desired yarn size and structure. This configuration produces two-axis or two-dimensional (2D) braids, but embodiments of the present invention can be manufactured using a three-axis or three-dimensional (3D) braiding machine.
