Description
Note 28: The method according to any one of Notes 25-27, further comprising the step of directly or indirectly attaching the proximal end of a urinary catheter to a fluid pump and operating the pump to apply negative pressure to the proximal end of the proximal portion of the urinary catheter, thereby inducing negative pressure in the patient's kidney, renal pelvis, and/or bladder. The present invention provides, for example, the following: (Item 1) A catheter configured to be deployed into the patient's urinary tract, wherein the catheter is A proximal portion configured to pass through a percutaneous opening, A distal portion comprising a retention portion configured to be deployed into the patient's kidney, renal pelvis, and/or bladder. Equipped with, A catheter wherein the retention portion comprises one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations, and the retention portion is configured, when deployed, to establish an outer periphery or protective surface area that prevents mucosal tissue from occluding the one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations in response to the application of negative pressure through the catheter. (Item 2) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the catheter is configured to transition between a retracted configuration, which allows the catheter to pass through the percutaneous opening, and an extended configuration, which is configured to secure at least the distal portion of the catheter within the patient's kidney, renal pelvis, and/or bladder. (Item 3) The catheter described in item 1, wherein, when deployed, the maximum outer diameter of the retaining portion is greater than the diameter of the catheter's discharge lumen. (Item 4) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the retaining portion comprises an expandable retaining portion, and when deployed, the expandable retaining portion defines a three-dimensional shape that is sized and positioned to maintain the patency of the fluid flow between the kidney and the proximal end of the catheter, such that at least a portion of the fluid flow flows through the expandable retaining portion. (Item 5) The catheter according to item 4, wherein the area of the two-dimensional slice of the three-dimensional shape defined by the unfolded expandable retainer portion in a plane transverse to the central axis of the expandable retainer portion decreases toward the distal end of the expandable retainer portion. (Item 6) The catheter according to item 4, wherein the maximum cross-sectional area of the three-dimensional shape defined by the unfolded expandable retainer portion in a plane transverse to the central axis of the expandable retainer portion is less than or equal to about 500 mm² . (Item 7) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the retention portion has a distal end that is precisely sized to be positioned within the renal pelvis. (Item 8) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the retention portion comprises a coiled retention portion having at least a first coil having a first diameter and at least a second coil having a second diameter, the first diameter being greater than the second diameter. (Item 9) The catheter described in item 8, wherein the first coil is closer to the proximal portion of the catheter than the second coil. (Item 10) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the retention portion comprises a coil-shaped retention portion having a plurality of coils, and the most distal coil among the plurality of coils has a smaller diameter than the other coils among the plurality of coils. (Item 11) The catheter according to item 10, wherein the coiled restraint portion comprises a straight portion extending through the restraint portion, and the plurality of coils are wound around the straight portion. (Item 12) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the retaining portion extends in the same manner as the other parts of the catheter. (Item 13) The catheter described in item 1, wherein the axial length of the retention portion from the proximal end to the distal end is approximately 5 mm to approximately 100 mm. (Item 14) The ureteral catheter according to item 1, wherein the one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or punctures have a diameter ranging from 0.0005 mm to about 2.0 mm. (Item 15) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the catheter comprises an extension tube extending from the proximal end of the proximal portion to the distal end of the distal portion. (Item 16) The extension tube is the catheter described in item 15, having a length of approximately 30 cm to approximately 120 cm. (Item 17) The catheter according to item 15, wherein the extension tube has an outer diameter of about 1.0 mm to about 10.0 mm and/or an inner diameter of about 0.5 mm to about 9.5 mm. (Item 18) The catheter according to item 1, wherein the proximal end of the proximal portion of the catheter is configured to be connected to a pump for applying the negative pressure through
