Description

Further embodiments of the invention: 1. A composition comprising a biologically pure culture of at least one strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a suitable carrier in an amount effective in increasing the average daily weight gain of monogastric animals. 2. A composition comprising a biologically pure culture of at least one strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a suitable carrier in an amount effective for maintaining or growing a microbial population in the intestines of monogastric animals and/or their littermates. 3. (a) The microbial community is involved in fiber digestion, the conversion of primary bile acids to secondary bile acids, or both, and in some cases, the microorganisms involved in fiber digestion belong to the phylum Fibrobacteres, the phylum Actinobacteria, or both, preferably the microorganisms involved in fiber digestion belong to the genus Fibrobacteres, the family Bifidobacteriaceae, or both, more preferably the microorganisms involved in fiber digestion are strains of Fibrobacter intestinalis; or (b) The microorganisms involved in the conversion of primary bile acids to secondary bile acids belong to the phylum Actinobacteria, and in some cases, the microorganisms involved in the conversion of primary bile acids to secondary bile acids belong to the family Coriobacteriaceae. The composition of Embodiment 2. 4. The composition of Embodiment 2 or 3, wherein a population of microorganisms can increase the average daily weight gain of monogastric animals. 5. (a) Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain is a probiotic strain; (b) A strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii; (c) The Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain deposited with CNCM under accession number I-1079 is the Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii strain; (d) A suitable carrier is animal feed; (e) A biologically pure culture of at least one strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in an amount of at least 1 × 10⁹ CFU per kilogram of composition; (f) The composition further comprises at least one additional microbial strain; (g) The composition is in the form of gelatin capsules, pressed tablets, gel caps, animal feed or liquid beverages; and/or (h) The monogastric animal is a pig, dog, cat, horse, rabbit or poultry or its offspring. A composition according to any one of Embodiments 1 to 4. 6. A feed or food additive comprising the composition described in any one of Embodiments 1 to 5. 7. Use of any of the compositions described in Embodiments 1, 4, and 5 to increase the average daily weight gain of monogastric animals. 8. Use of Embodiment 7, wherein the average daily weight gain of monogastric animals fed the composition is increased by at least 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, or 100% compared to the average daily weight gain of monogastric animals not fed the composition. 9. Use of the composition according to any one of Embodiments 2 to 5 for maintaining or growing a microbial population in the intestines of monogastric animals and/or their littermates. 10. (a) When the population of microorganisms in the intestines of monogastric animals fed the composition is compared with the population of microorganisms in monogastric animals not fed the composition, the population is at least 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80, 85, 90, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 145, 150, 155, 160, (b) a population of microorganisms that are increased by 165, 170, 175, 180, 185, 190, 200, 205, 210, 215, 220, 225, 230, 235, 240, 245, 250, 255, 260, 265, 270, 275, 280, 285, 290, 295 or 300%, and/or (b) a population of microorganisms that are involved in fiber digestion, conversion of primary bile acids to secondary bile acids, or both. Use of Embodiment 9. 11. A method for maintaining or growing a community of microorganisms in the intestines of a monogastric animal and/or its littermates, comprising the step of feeding the monogastric animal an effective amount of the composition described in any one of Embodiments 2 to 5. 12.
