Description

The manufactured carbon fibers can be characterized by their density. Generally, carbon fibers formed according to the methods described herein have a lower density than conventional carbon fibers. Advantageously, this disclosure provides low-density, lightweight carbon fibers. Carbon fibers manufactured according to this disclosure can have a density of 1.80 g/ cm³ or less , typically 1.79 g/ cm³ or less , and typically 1.78 g/ cm³ or less . In one embodiment, the density is 1.50 to 1.77 g/ cm³ . In another embodiment, the density is 1.70 to 1.77 g/ cm³ or 1.74 to 1.79 g/ cm³ .
