Description

This invention relates to a pedestrian protection device for vehicles, and more particularly to a pedestrian protection device for vehicles that mitigates the impact on pedestrians by raising a hood provided on the front of the vehicle body. When a pedestrian collides head-on with a moving vehicle, the pedestrian may first hit the front bumper at the front of the vehicle, and then their head may strike the hood that covers the engine compartment at the front of the vehicle. A head striking the hood at high speed will result in a significant impact force. Therefore, pedestrian protection devices have been developed to mitigate the impact by raising the hood and reducing the speed at which the pedestrian's head strikes it. For example, Patent Document 1 describes a pedestrian protection device comprising a front-end actuator that lifts the front end of the hood with a rod member positioned at the front end when a vehicle collides with a pedestrian, and a rear-end actuator that lifts the rear end of the hood with a rod member positioned at the rear end. In this device, by lifting both the front and rear ends of the hood during a collision, the speed at which a pedestrian's head hits the hood can be reduced on both the front and rear sides of the hood if the pedestrian falls onto the hood due to the collision.
