Abstract

An untreated and creped tissue web having low stiffness and surface lint, and a tissue product produced therefrom are disclosed. The product of the present invention may be manufactured by a printing creping process configured to place a non-crosslinked latex polymer on at least one of the outer surfaces of the tissue product. The non-crosslinked latex polymer creping composition does not negatively affect the stiffness such that the product generally has a stiffness index of less than about 5.0, e.g., about 2.5 to about 5.0.

Description

Multi-ply tissue products The present invention relates to a multi-ply tissue product. Absorbent paper products, such as paper towels, facial tissues, and other similar products, are designed to possess several important characteristics. For instance, the products must have good bulk, a soft feel, and high absorbency. They must also maintain good strength even when wet and resist tearing. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to produce high-strength paper products that are both soft and highly absorbent. Generally, taking measures to improve one characteristic of a product adversely affects other characteristics. For instance, softness is typically increased by reducing or decreasing fiber bonding within the paper product. However, inhibiting or reducing fiber bonding has a negative impact on the strength of the paper web. One tissue manufacturing process for balancing often competing physical properties is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 7,462,258. The process may be suitable for printing a binder on one or both sides of a fibrous web and typically includes a single creping step after applying the binder. The binder is a cross-linked latex and contains an azetidinium-reactive polymer. The presence of the azetidinium-reactive polymer enables the binder to cross-link with both itself and the cellulose of the fibrous web. In this way, the cross-linked latex of Patent '258 forms covalent bonds with the cellulose of the fibrous web. Thus, '258 discloses a process for producing tissue products with good bulk, flexibility, and absorbency, but the binder is covalently bonded with the cellulose of the fibrous web and hinders the web from dispersing when wet. An alternative to the cross-linked latex binder of Patent '258 is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 9,121,137, which discloses a cross-linked latex binder comprising a primary polymer and a polyfunctional aldehyde. The polyfunctional aldehyde, like the azetidinium-reactive polymer contained in the binder of Patent '258, enables the binder to form covalent bonds with cellulose. Thus, products produced according to Patent '137 retain a significant portion of their tensile strength even after an extended period following wetting. Therefore, there remains a need in the industry for tissue manufacturing processes that balance often competing physical properties, such as bulk, hand feel, and absorbency, while also providing products that can be easily dispersed. The present invention provides a crepeated tissue web and a multi-ply tissue product produced therefrom. Generally, the product has improved properties such as low stiffness and surface lint, even though it does not have a surface treatment agent such as silicone, wax, lotion, or a quaternary ammonium compound containing an alkyl chain. The product of the present invention generally comprises two or more tissue layers, e.g., two, three, or four layers. At least one of the layers, and preferably two or more of the layers, is produced by a creping process, more preferably by a printing crepe process. In certain preferred embodiments, one or more layers are produced by a printing crepe process in which a non-crosslinked latex polymer is placed on the outer surface of the layers. Without being bound by any particular theory, the presence of the non-crosslinked latex polymer is believed to improve certain surface properties, such as smoothness, and may also improve durability. However, surprisingly, the non-crosslinked latex polymer does not have a negative effect on the stiffness (measured as the stiffness index), such that the product produced according to the present invention generally has a stiffness index of less than about 5.0, e.g., about 2.5 to about 5.0. In another embodiment, the multi-ply tissue product of the present invention has a low level of surface lint that can be measured as slaw. Surface lint is generally caused by the release of loosely bonded fibers from the surface of tissue products in use and is often a problem when producing soft tissue products with low stiffness. Despite this tendency, the tissue product of the present invention surprisingly possesses both low slaw, such as less than about 5.0 mg, and low stiffness, such as a stiffness index of less than about 5.0. For example, in one embodiment, the present invention provides a tissue product comprising a spirally wound, untreated, creped multi-ply tissue product having a geometric mean tensile (GMT) of more than about 1,000 g/3", a stiffness index of less than about 5.0, and slaw of less than about 5.0 mg. In another embodiment, the present invention provides an untreated and creped tissue product having good strength and durability. For example, the present invention provides an untreated and creped multi-layer tissue product comprising a first untreated and creped tissue layer and a second untreated and creped tissue layer, said untreated and creped multi-layer tissue product having a geometric mean tensile strength (GMT) of about 1,000 g/3
