Description

Pouch-type Battery Cell The present invention relates to a pouch-type battery cell for a secondary battery having an electrode assembly inside a pouch, and a battery module having the same. Unlike primary batteries, secondary batteries can be charged and discharged, so they can be applied in various fields such as digital cameras, mobile phones, laptops, hybrid cars, and electric vehicles. Examples of secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Among these secondary batteries, extensive research is currently underway on lithium secondary batteries, which possess high energy density and discharge voltage. Recently, lithium secondary batteries have been manufactured as flexible pouch-type cells or rigid prismatic or cylindrical can-type cells, and multiple battery cells are electrically connected for use. In this process, multiple battery cells form a stacked cell array, which is placed inside a module housing to form a battery module. FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view illustrating an example of a battery module (20) having a pouch-type battery cell (10) according to the prior art, FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the pouch-type battery cell (10) shown in FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram of the pouch-type battery cell (10) shown in FIG. 2. Referring to FIG. 1, a battery module (20) according to the prior art, which has pouch-type battery cells (10), is arranged such that a plurality of pouch-type battery cells (10) are stacked inside a module housing (21, 25). The module housing (21, 25) may include a bottom plate (21) having a shape in which one side (e.g., the upper side) is open, composed of a bottom portion (22) and a side wall portion (23), and a cover plate (25) that covers the open side of the bottom plate (21). Such module housing (21, 25) may have a tubular shape with both ends open, and the open ends may have a structure in which they are covered by end plates (26). A busbar assembly (30) may be provided between the end plate (26) and the stack of battery cells (10). The busbar assembly (30) may be equipped with a busbar (not shown) to which the electrode lead (15) is electrically connected, and a connection terminal (32) electrically connected to the busbar and for electrical connection with the outside. Additionally, an opening (27) may be formed in the end plate (26) to expose the connection terminal (32) to the outside. Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, a conventional pouch-type battery cell (10) may include an electrode assembly (not shown) comprising a positive plate, a negative plate, and a separator, and a pouch (outer material) (11) that surrounds the electrode assembly. The pouch (11) is composed of an electrode receiving portion (12) that forms a portion for receiving the electrode assembly, and a sealing portion (13; 13a, 13b) formed by joining the periphery of the pouch (11) along the circumference of the electrode assembly. Additionally, the pouch-type battery cell (10) has a shape that includes electrode leads (15) that are connected to the electrode plates (positive plate, negative plate) of the electrode assembly and protrude outward from the pouch (12) at both ends in the width direction (length direction) (left and right direction in FIG. 3) of the battery cell (10), and an insulating part (15a) that can increase the sealing degree of the pouch (11) and simultaneously secure an electrical insulation state at the position where the electrode leads (15) are drawn out among the sealing parts (13a, 13b). As illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, a pouch-type battery cell (10) according to the prior art has a structure in which a sealing portion (13a) is formed at both ends (both sides) in the width direction (length direction) and an electrode lead (15) extends outside the sealing portion (13a). Therefore, the width (length) (L1) of the area (A') where the electrode plates (positive plate and negative plate) of the electrode assembly are installed has only a portion of the total width (length) (L) of the battery cell (10). That is, in the pouch-type battery cell (10) according to the prior art, the electrode plates are not formed at each end of the battery cell by a width (L2) equal to the sum of the width (L3) of the sealing portion (13a) and the protruding length (L4) of the electrode lead (15). In this way, in the case of a pouch-type battery cell (10), the width (length) (L2) of the area where the electrode plate is not formed in the exposed part of the electrode lead (15) is approximately 20 mm. Considering that the electrode lead (15) connected to the positive plate and the negative plate, respectively, is placed on both sides of the battery cell (10), the pouch-type battery cell (10) according to the prior art does not have an electrode plate installed in a width (length) of approximately 40 mm out of the total width (length) (L) of the battery cell (10). In particular, the pouch
