KR-20260066166-A - Mobile network blacklist for satellite networks
Abstract
The present invention relates to a mobile network blacklist for satellite networks. Information identifying a satellite network may be stored in the mobile network blacklist to prevent the transmission of wireless access requests to the satellite network. When it is determined that no authorized network is available to provide wireless communication services, the information identifying the satellite network may be removed from the mobile network blacklist, thereby enabling the transmission of wireless access requests to allow the satellite network to provide wireless communication services. By doing so, the satellite network may provide wireless communication services when other authorized networks are not available to provide wireless communication services.

Description
Mobile network blacklist for satellite networks Cross-reference of related applications This Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) application claims the benefit of U.S. Regular Patent Application No. 18/472,205 filed on September 21, 2023, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. Current wireless communication systems (e.g., fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks) utilize base stations to communicate with user equipment (UEs). Base stations are located on the Earth's surface and can support remote communication coverage in the surrounding area. When within a base station's coverage area, a UE can connect to the base station to communicate data over the network. Currently, the sixth-generation mobile system standard (6G) is under development. In contrast to 5G, 6G enables UEs to communicate directly with orbiting satellites. A UE can connect to a satellite when within the satellite's coverage area. Generally, satellites can provide a wider coverage area and can more easily provide coverage to remote locations. Accordingly, network providers are utilizing non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) to increase coverage and provide improved networks. A detailed description of embodiments of the present invention will be described and explained with reference to the attached drawings. FIG. 1 illustrates a wireless communication network capable of implementing embodiments of the present technology. FIG. 2 illustrates 5G core network functions (NF) capable of implementing embodiments of the present technology. FIG. 3 illustrates a method for managing a mobile network blacklist for satellite networks according to embodiments of the present technology. FIG. 4 illustrates components of a computing device capable of implementing embodiments of the present technology. The technology described herein will become more apparent to those skilled in the art by reviewing the detailed description together with the drawings. Embodiments or embodiments describing aspects of the invention are illustrated by way of example, and the same reference numerals may denote similar elements. Although the drawings illustrate various embodiments for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will recognize that alternative embodiments may be used without departing from the principles of the technology. Accordingly, while specific embodiments are illustrated in the drawings, the technology is subject to various modifications. Next-generation wireless communications, such as 6G, utilize satellites to improve network coverage. Given that satellites are not confined to the Earth's surface, they can provide a wider coverage area than base stations and more easily extend coverage to remote locations. As a result of this increased coverage, a larger number of users compete for the communication resources provided by satellite networks, which can lead to increased congestion. This congestion can be exacerbated by the limited wireless resources provided by these networks. For example, satellite networks can be difficult or expensive to implement, which may result in reduced bandwidth or higher latency. Consequently, satellite networks may become resource-constrained due to increased competition for limited communication resources. Given that satellite networks may be more resource-constrained than terrestrial networks implemented via surface-bound base stations, mobile network operators may choose to limit network traffic to satellite networks to ensure that sufficient radio resources are available to service users within coverage areas covered exclusively by satellite networks. For example, satellite networks can extend the coverage of mobile networks into remote areas where installing base stations might be too difficult or too costly. Consequently, users located in these areas may receive radio communication services only through satellite networks. To prioritize satellite network resources for these users, mobile network operators may choose to block requests for radio communication services to be provided via the satellite network when both the terrestrial network and the satellite network are available to provide radio communication services. The present invention relates to techniques, devices, and systems for restricting requests to a satellite network for wireless communication services when a terrestrial network is available to provide wireless communication services. In embodiments, information related to the satellite network (e.g., Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) codes) may be stored in a mobile network blacklist of a wireless device, such as a Forbidden PLMN (FPLMN) list. When information related to the mobile network is stored in the mobile network blacklist, the wireless device may be prevented from initiating a request to cause the mobile network to provide wireless communication services. Generally, a satellite network may be placed on the mobile network blacklist when a terrestrial network is available. When a wireless device de
