A method for selecting a surgical technique for hernias of the esophageal opening of the diaphragm of types II-IV, characterized by the fact that, according to X-ray data of the esophagus, stomach or computed tomography of the chest and abdominal cavity, in case of shortening of the esophagus, plastic surgery of the hiatal opening, regardless of its size, is performed with the patient's own tissues and a circular fundoplication is performed; with a normal length of the esophagus and dimensions of the hiatal opening of less than 5 cm, its plastic surgery is also performed with the patient's own tissues and a circular fundoplication; with a normal length of the esophagus and dimensions of the hiatal opening of more than 5 cm, its plastic surgery is performed using prosthetic material with location behind the esophagus and an incomplete posterior fundoplication.
