Claims (20)

  1. 1. An aerosol generating device configured to accommodate an article for generating an aerosol, wherein said aerosol generating device comprises:
  2. a housing defining a cavity in the device that is configured to at least partially accommodate an aerosol-generating article and to operatively locate the aerosol-generating article in a position for use within the aerosol-generating device; and
  3. time-of-flight sensor unit;
  4. wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to measure at least one characteristic property related to the aerosol generating article within the cavity of the device; and
  5. wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to selectively operate either in the time-of-flight signal measurement mode or in the lighting mode.
  6. 2. The aerosol generating device of claim 1, wherein said at least one characteristic property is one or more of the following:
  7. the position of the product for generating an aerosol inside the cavity of the device;
  8. recording the puff created as a result of aerosolization of the aerosol-forming material of the aerosol-generating product;
  9. characteristic of the surface of a part of the surface of the product for generating an aerosol;
  10. a surface structure formed on an article for generating an aerosol;
  11. registering the presence of an aerosol generating product within the cavity of the device; or
  12. identification mark or marker of an aerosol-generating product.
  13. 3. An aerosol generating device according to claim 1, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit comprises an emitter configured to emit a light signal or an acoustic signal in the direction of an aerosol generating article located in the cavity of the device.
  14. 4. The aerosol generating device of claim 1, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit comprises a receiver configured to receive at least one of a reflected acoustic signal or a reflected light signal.
  15. 5. The aerosol generating device according to claim 2, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to operate in a time-of-flight signal measurement mode for measuring any of: the position of the aerosol generating article within the cavity of the device or registering the presence of the aerosol generating article within the cavity of the device.
  16. 6. The aerosol generating device of claim 2, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to operate in a lighting mode to measure any of: a surface characteristic of a portion of the surface of the aerosol generating article or a surface structure of the aerosol generating article.
  17. 7. The aerosol generating device according to claim 2, wherein the surface characteristic of the portion of the surface of the aerosol generating article is at least one of: reflective characteristics, absorption characteristics, refractive characteristics, diffuse reflective characteristics, or scattering characteristics.
  18. 8. The aerosol generating device of claim 2, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to determine statistical variability of the time-of-flight signal to measure puff registration.
  19. 9. The aerosol generating device according to claim 1, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit is configured to measure a two-dimensional surface characteristic or a three-dimensional surface characteristic of one or more parts of the surface of the aerosol generating article.
  20. 10. The aerosol generating device according to claim 1, wherein said time-of-flight sensor unit comprises a temperature sensor, wherein said temperature sensor is configured to measure temperature in order to determine the air temperature inside the cavity of the device.
