Claims (16)

1. 1. An edible pet chew product containing concentrated fruit juice in an amount effective as both a humectant and a plasticizer in the edible pet chew product.
2. 2. The edible chewable pet product of claim 1, which is substantially free of glycerin and substantially free of propylene glycol.
3. 3. An edible chewable product for pets according to claim 1 or 2, further containing starch.
4. 4. An edible chewable product for pets according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the concentrated fruit juice is selected from the group consisting of: plum, apple, carob, date, blueberry, strawberry, pear, grape, peach, and mixtures thereof.
5. 5. An edible chewable pet food product according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the concentrated fruit juice is a mixture of apple and carob.
6. 6. An edible pet chew product according to any one of claims 1 to 5, which has a property that is at least an improved texture or an increased use time compared to a reference edible pet chew product that contains glycerin and/or propylene glycol in place of concentrated fruit juice, but is otherwise identical in composition.
7. 7. A method for producing an edible chewable product for pets, comprising:
8. extruding a composition containing concentrated fruit juice, wherein the concentrated fruit juice is present in the composition in an amount effective both as a humectant and as a plasticizer in the extruded composition.
9. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the extrusion is carried out in an extruder containing or associated with a die that has an opening that shapes the extruded composition to form an edible chewable product for pets.
10. 9. The method of claim 7 or 8, wherein the edible chewable product for pets is formulated for oral administration to a dog.
11. 10. The method of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the edible chewable product is substantially free of glycerin and substantially free of propylene glycol.
12. 11. The method of any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein the edible pet chew has a property that is one or both of improved texture or increased use time compared to a reference edible pet chew that contains glycerin and/or propylene glycol in place of concentrated fruit juice, but is otherwise identical in composition.
13. 12. A method of cleaning the teeth of a companion animal, comprising orally administering to the companion animal an edible chew product containing concentrated fruit juice in an amount effective as both a humectant and a plasticizer in the edible chew product.
14. 13 The method of claim 12, wherein the edible chewable product is substantially free of glycerin and substantially free of propylene glycol.
15. 14. The method of claim 12 or 13, wherein the edible pet chew has a property that is at least an improved texture or an increased use time compared to a reference edible pet chew that contains glycerin and/or propylene glycol in place of concentrated fruit juice, but is otherwise identical in composition.
16. 15. The method of any one of claims 12 to 14, wherein the pet to which the edible chew product is applied is a dog.
