Claims (20)
- 1. An aerosol generating device for heating an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol therefrom, the device comprising:
- a resonant cavity for accommodating and retrieving an aerosol-forming substrate; and
- an electromagnetic wave generator for generating a radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic wave and
- control electronics connected to an electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is connected to one or more locations within the resonant cavity for transmitting an RF electromagnetic wave into the resonant cavity under the control of the control electronics, for selectively exciting different specified electromagnetic modes of the resonant cavity, wherein each of the specified electromagnetic modes is connected to the generation of a corresponding RF electric wave radiation field within the resonant cavity for heating the substrate that forms the aerosol.
- 2. An aerosol generating device according to claim 1, wherein the specified electromagnetic modes comprise a first electromagnetic mode and a second electromagnetic mode, wherein the first and second electromagnetic modes have a common resonant frequency, and wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is configured to generate an RF electromagnetic wave at said common resonant frequency.
- 3. An aerosol generating device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the control electronics are configured to control the electromagnetic wave generator to switch between generating an RF electromagnetic wave at a first specified frequency and generating an RF electromagnetic wave at a second specified frequency, wherein the first specified frequency differs from the second specified frequency, wherein the first and second specified frequencies are associated with the excitation of the corresponding first and second of the specified electromagnetic modes.

The aerosol generating device of claim 3, wherein the first predetermined frequency is a first resonant frequency associated with the first predetermined electromagnetic mode, and the second predetermined frequency is a second resonant frequency associated with the second predetermined electromagnetic mode.
- 5. The aerosol generating device according to claim 4, wherein the ratio of the first resonant frequency to the second resonant frequency is from 0.75 to 1.33, or from 0.80 to 1.25, or from 0.85 to 1.18, or from 0.90 to 1.11, or from 0.95 to 1.05.
- 6. An aerosol generating device according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the control electronics are configured to switch between exciting different or combinations of specified electromagnetic modes during a session of use.
- 7. An aerosol generating device according to claim 6, wherein the control electronics are configured to switch between exciting different or combinations of predetermined electromagnetic modes to maintain a target temperature or to follow a target temperature profile for a usage session, and wherein, as an option, one or both of the target temperature and the target temperature profile are related to a target temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate when placed in the resonant cavity.
- 8. An aerosol generating device according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is coupled to a plurality of locations within the resonant cavity, and the control electronics are configured to switch between transmitting the RF electromagnetic wave to different or combinations of said plurality of locations.

An aerosol generating device according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is coupled to a plurality of locations within the resonant cavity, and the control electronics are configured to simultaneously transmit an RF electromagnetic wave to at least a first and a second of said plurality of locations to thereby simultaneously generate at least corresponding first and second RF electric wave radiation fields within the resonant cavity.
- 10. An aerosol generating device according to claim 9, wherein said at least first and second locations of said plurality of locations are arranged relative to each other such that the corresponding first and second RF electric wave radiation fields are spaced apart in the axial direction along at least a portion of the length of the resonant cavity.
- 11. An aerosol generating device according to claim 9 or 10, wherein the first and second locations of said plurality of locations are associated with a common mode of given electromagnetic modes of the resonant cavity.
- 12. An aerosol generating device according to any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the connection between the electromagnetic wave generator and said one or more locations within the resonant cavity comprises:
- a first coupling system located at least partially within the resonant cavity at a first of said one or more locations and configured to excite a first of said specified electromagnetic modes of the resonant cavity that is mutually exclusive of or preferential to a second of said specified electromagnetic modes of the resonant cavity; and
- a second coupling system located at least partially within the resonant cavity in the second of said one or more locations and configured to excite said second given electromagnetic mode of the resonant cavity, mutually exclusive or preferential with respect to said first given electromagnetic mode of the resonant cavity.
- 13. An aerosol generating device according to claim 12, wherein the first coupling system is configured to form a generally uniform RF electric wave radiation field along at least part of the length of the resonant cavity upon excitation of said first specified electromagnetic mode of the resonant cavity.
- 14. An aerosol generating device according to claim 12 or 13, wherein the second coupling system is configured to form at least one peripheral field of RF electric wave radiation at least partially surrounding the longitudinal axis of the resonant cavity, upon excitation of said second specified electromagnetic mode of the resonant cavity.
