Claims (20)
- 1. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer consisting of blocks of N-vinylpyrrolidone fragments separated by maleic acid fragments, where each maleic acid fragment has as functional groups a carboxyl group (-COO-) and a carbamoyl group (-CONH-), or two carboxyl groups (-COO-), or two carbamoyl groups (-CONH-), and from 1 to 50% of the functional groups of all maleic acid fragments in the vinylpyrrolidone copolymer are functionalized
- -L-Y-BP,
- Where
- L is a C 1 -C 5 alkyl linker;
- BP represents a benzophenone substituent; and
- Y represents a bond, -OCO-, -NHCO-, -CO-, -O-, -NH-, -COO-,
- -CONH-, -NHCOO-, -OCONH-, -OCOO-, -NHCONH-, -OCOCH 2 -, -NHCOCH 2 -, -COCH 2 -, -OCH 2 -, -NHCH 2 -, -COOCH 2 -, -CONHCH 2 -, -NHCOOCH 2 -, -OCONHCH 2 -, -OCOOCH 2 - and -NHCONHCH 2 -,
- provided that when Y is -O-, the C 1 -C 5 alkyl linker (L) is not ethylene (-CH 2 CH 2 -).
- 2. The vinylpyrrolidone copolymer of claim 1, wherein the C 1 -C 5 alkyl linker is selected from the group consisting of methylene (-CH 2 -), ethylene (-CH 2 CH 2 -), propylene (-CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -), butylene (-CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -) and pentylene (-CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -).
- 3. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer according to claim 1, wherein the benzophenone substituent BP is benzoylphenyl.
- 4. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein Y is -OCO-, -NHCO-, -COO-, -CONH-, -OCOCH 2 -, -NHCOCH 2 -, -COOCH 2 - or -CONHCH 2 -.
- 5. The vinylpyrrolidone copolymer of claim 1, wherein Y is -NHCO-, -CONH-, -NHCOCH 2 - or -CONHCH 2 -.
- 6. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein up to 100% of the functional groups of all maleic acid moieties in the vinylpyrrolidone copolymer that are not functionalized with -LY-BP independently of one another have a non-benzophenone residue selected from the group comprising or consisting of: -( CH2CH2O ) q -H, polylactide, polyglycolide, polyacrylate, alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylhydroxy, arylhydroxy, alkylaryloxy, alkylamino, arylamino, alkylarylamino, silyl, and organometallic, where q is an integer between 35 and 50;
- where the ratio of -L-Y-BP to the non-benzophenone moiety is ≥1, and the remaining functional groups of all maleic acid moieties in the vinylpyrrolidone copolymer have an -H moiety.
- 7. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein up to 100% of the functional groups of all maleic acid moieties in the vinylpyrrolidone copolymer that are not functionalized with -LY-BP independently of one another have a non-benzophenone moiety selected from the group comprising or consisting of: polyethyleneglycol -( CH2CH2O ) q -H, polylactide, polyglycolide and polyacrylate, where q is an integer between 35 and 50;
- where the ratio of -L-Y-BP to the non-benzophenone moiety is ≥1, and the remaining functional groups of all maleic acid moieties in the vinylpyrrolidone copolymer have an -H moiety.
- 8. A vinylpyrrolidone copolymer according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the copolymer has the general formula (ii):
