Description

AREA OF TECHNOLOGY Aspects of the present invention generally relate to compositions suitable for the treatment of acne, and in particular to compositions containing alpha hydroxy acids and polyhydroxy acids. PREREQUISITES FOR THE CREATION OF THE INVENTION Acne conditions are often classified as noninflammatory or inflammatory. Noninflammatory acne is characterized by the presence of closed comedones (whiteheads) and open comedones (blackheads), which consist of compact masses of keratin, sebum, and bacteria that dilate the follicular duct. A comedone forms when the pilosebaceous duct is blocked and/or when the sebaceous gland overproduces sebum. Comedone formation can be followed by inflammation, resulting from bacterial proliferation and/or sebum overproduction. Typically, the bacteria are anaerobic, such as Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). Inflammatory acne is characterized by papules (pimples), pustules, and nodulocystic lesions, which may lead to scarring. Several factors are believed to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of acne, including sebum production, hormonal stimulation, pore clogging, and skin pathogens. In individuals with acne, sebum levels are elevated by approximately 70% compared to those in controls. Various methods and products have been used to treat acne, but there remains a continuing need for additional treatments, as no single method has been found to be universally effective. Furthermore, there is a continuing need to find acne treatments that are not only effective but also well-tolerated. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One aspect of the invention relates to a composition for treating acne comprising: a. from about 0.1% by weight to about 7.5% by weight of glycolic acid; b. from about 0.1% by weight to about 5% by weight of gluconolactone; c. from about 0.1% by weight to about 5% by weight of mandelic acid; d glycol; e. salt-resistant thickening polymer, wherein the total amount of glycolic acid, gluconolactone and mandelic acid is less than about 15% by weight of the total weight of the composition.
