Abstract

A vehicle console includes a housing having sidewalls defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size having a first length and a lid coupled to the housing and moveable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second size with a second length that is less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder located below the exposed open top such that a container when placed in the cup holder is exposed.

Claims (20)

1. 1 . A vehicle console comprising: a housing having sidewalls defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size having a first length; a lid coupled to the housing and moveable between an open position and a closed position, the lid having a second size with a second length that is less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position; and a first tray disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder located below the exposed open top such that a container when placed in the cup holder is exposed.
2. 2 . The vehicle console of claim 1 , wherein the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening.
3. 3 . The vehicle console of claim 2 , wherein the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing.
4. 4 . The vehicle console of claim 1 , wherein the tray further comprises one or more open tray portions.
5. 5 . The vehicle console of claim 4 , wherein the first tray comprises first and second open tray portions.
6. 6 . The vehicle console of claim 1 , further comprising a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and moveable to a position below the lid.
7. 7 . The vehicle console of claim 6 , wherein the second tray is supported on a track proximate the top access opening.
8. 8 . The vehicle console of claim 7 , wherein the first tray is supported on a bottom of the storage compartment.
9. 9 . The vehicle console of claim 1 , wherein the top access opening and the lid are generally rectangular.
10. 10 . The vehicle console of claim 1 , wherein the console is a center console configured to be positioned between the first and second seats in the vehicle.
11. 11 . A vehicle comprising: a first seat; a second seat spaced from the first seat; and a center console located between the first and second seats, the center console comprising: a housing having sidewalls defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size having a first length; a lid coupled to the housing and moveable between an open position and a closed position, the lid having a second size with a second length that is less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position; and a first tray disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder located below the exposed open top such that a container when placed in the cup holder is exposed.
12. 12 . The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening.
13. 13 . The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing.
14. 14 . The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the tray further comprises one or more open tray portions.
15. 15 . The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the first tray comprises first and second open tray portions.
16. 16 . The vehicle of claim 11 , further comprising a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the open top portion and moveable to a position below the lid.
17. 17 . The vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the second tray is supported on a track proximate a top of the top access opening.
18. 18 . The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the first tray is supported on a bottom of the storage compartment.
19. 19 . The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the top access opening and the lid are generally rectangular.
20. 20 . The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the console is a center console configured to be positioned between the first and second seats.

Description

FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure generally relates to a console arrangements for motor vehicles, and more specifically relates to a vehicle console having a tray with an accessible cup holder. BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE Motor vehicles are commonly equipped with storage compartments, such as consoles. For example, a center console is often installed between a driver's seat and a passenger's seat in a front row of seating in a passenger motor vehicle. The center console typically has a main storage compartment with a lid which also serves as an arm rest and may include one or more drink holders and storage trays. It would be desirable to provide for a center console which offers a tray with enhanced availability of a cup holder. SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, a vehicle console includes a housing having sidewalls defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size having a first length and a lid coupled to the housing and moveable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second size with a second length that is less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder located below the exposed open top such that a container when placed in the cup holder is exposed. Embodiments of the first aspect of the present disclosure can include any one or a combination of the following features: the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening;the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing;the tray comprises one or more open tray portions;the first tray comprises first and second open tray portions;a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and moveable to a position below the lid;the second tray is supported on a track proximate the top access opening;the first tray is supported on a bottom of the storage compartment;the top access opening and the lid are generally rectangular; andthe console is a center console configured to be positioned between the first and second seats. According to a second aspect of the present disclosure, a vehicle has a first seat, a second seat spaced from the first seat and a center console located between the first and second seats. The center console includes a housing having sidewalls defining a storage compartment having a top access opening of a first size having a first length and a lid coupled to the housing and moveable between an open position and a closed position. The lid has a second size with a second length that is less than the first length so as to expose a portion of the top access opening when the lid is in the closed position. A first tray is disposed within the storage compartment and configured with a cup holder located below the exposed open top such that a container when placed in the cup holder is exposed. Embodiments of the second aspect of the present disclosure can include any one or a combination of the following features: the exposed open top is on a vehicle forward portion of the top access opening;the lid pivots about a hinge at a rearward portion of the housing;the tray comprises one or more open tray portions;the first tray comprises first and second open tray portions;a second tray disposed above the first tray, wherein the second tray is configured to be positioned within the exposed open top and moveable to a position below the lid;the second tray is supported on a track proximate the top access opening;the first tray is supported on a bottom of the storage compartment;the top access opening and the lid are generally rectangular; andthe console is a center console configured to be positioned between the first and second seats.
